I know the Franz Kroll, Peters edition of The Well Tempered Clavier is out of print. Does anyone know where I could get used copies?

I think any second hand bookstore that specializes in music. Perhaps Dover reprinted it too. I have it actually. There are editions that are better than the Kroll which is known to be inaccurate in places. Why do you want it?

I want to buy the Jones/Tovey edition soon. I think it is one of the best at the moment. Did your teacher tell you to buy the Kroll edition?

I hear that's very good too.

The Jones/Tovey edition is very good, as is the Barenreiter, the Henle, and a few others.

Then there are editions which are really interpretations - not good scholarly editions but provide a point of view for performance, like the Bartok edition.

I have Bk II in the Peters/Kroll edition. I am not so sure what is special about it, nor why anyone would eagerly seek it out, given all the other good editions available.

Regards,

The ONLY reliable and current Urtext edition is Bärenreiter.

I have an unreliable edition. The notes move around whenever you try to play them! Sometimes they leave and go out and get drunk.

I wondered too.

Sure, there are worse editions grin ....but lots of good ones. From a quick look at this one (via chopin_r_us's link), I didn't see what might be regarded as special about it.

It was the first urtext, a very scholarly edition - something rare in the 19th century world of Bach.

All of your suggestions sound good, but what I need is the edition that comes closest to the Kroll. I am quite elderly, have been playing from the Kroll edition for years and find it difficult to contemplate a change. Have any of you used second-hand book stores that handle sheet music? I would appreciate any suggestions. I did buy the Bischoff.

Thanks.

Yes, I often go to second-hand book stores in the hope to find some treasures. I don't know where you are. Here (in Sydney, Australia) for example we also have a second-hand book store focussing on music. Maybe you have something similar where you are? These days you can often also find what you want online, for example on eBay.

I put "Bach Peters" in the search box. Search box is the way to go to find stuff with this new/used scores and LPs seller.

I really prefer Henle, their fingering-department deserves the Nobelprize for, well, fingering Bach.
