Hi , My name is Edward. I'm new here to this site and forum. I'm hoping I can get some help. I've searched everywhere. I was given a 1938 Lester Baby Grand. It needed restoring. I've just about finished it, but the music desk was missing. I'm trying to get as close to the original look as possible. Can anyone help me, either find one or pictures . Any help is greatly appreciated Thank you

I have to ask... who would tell it wasn't exactly the style that was original?

Now, go here and scroll down to the item you need, "Grand Piano Desks".

No one, but because of it's antiquity I would like it restored as close as possible. Thank you for the link

Google 'lester grand piano photos' and 'lester grand piano' and you will find lots of examples. The music desks are fairly standard.

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

I used to have a 6' Lester (ca. 1927 or ca. 1914, depending on who you ask), natural finish Philippine mahogany veneer.

I don't have any photos that show the music desk, but it was shaped like the one on this piano.

One difference: on mine, the front edges of the side "shelves" were curved. I'm not sure what those are called. They are the parts on either side of the desk itself that slide on the rails. The music desk was hinged to fold forward for when closing the lid.

Hope this helps.

I think you are operating out of a false assumption. Your Lester grand has no value as an antique.

As a native Philadelphia who was born into the piano restoration and sales business, I have seen dozens of lester piano. They were only slightly above average in their day. Also, an antique is something that last far beyond its normal life-expectency. The life expectency of an average grand piano is about 70 years.

While your piano may have sentimental value, going to a great deal of bother to find an original music desk to protect its "antiquity" doesn't really make any sense.

Among music desks, one design that was very common on Lesters is very memorable to me as a design that I like very much. It is similar to the standard Steinway music desk that is curved over the top, but it is a wider music desk. I think it looks elegant.

Enough old Lesters are headed to dumps these days that you might be able to get an original music desk from one of these. It would involve some investment of time and patience.

Here is a piano that is probably older than yours but which has the music desk I've been talking about; I have no knowledge about whether this desk was still used in the year when your piano was built.
