Hi Music-P,

I think I've mentioned this to you before, but I too have a Kawai K-48, but mine is a K-48A, satin-walnut. I assume that is what the "A" stands for. I love the piano! It is an older model (1969) but, as you say, has a warm and mellow tone. Mine has the three pedals, nickle plated tuning pins and the real one-piece ivory key-tops; and, mine also has the "K. Kawai" on the fallboard, which is unusual for a Kawai upright, from what I read (they normally just have "Kawai" whereas the grands have "K. Kawai" on the fallboard).

All I can say is that the one I have is a very nice upright piano, in spite of its age.

Maybe others will chime in with other opinions.

Good luck!

Rick

Hello Music-P,
If this piano has been checked and approved by a reputable piano technician, then I would be reassured that there are no significant defects.
The rich, warm sound quality is also a good indicator of the piano's mechanical and structural condition as generally you can hear the problems even before you can see them.
I am guessing that this is a 130cm upright(nearly 52") which will give a better sound than the shorter vertical models.

I believe that these older Kawai vertical models were very well made as Kawai was competing keenly with Yamaha in order to establish its share of the market. Certainly, these older instruments helped to consolidate Kawai's excellent reputation as a piano manufacturer.

I can see rust on the strings which is not unusual for a piano which has been a very warm, humid environment. While some rust on the strings is more of a cosmetic concern, it suggests the piano has been exposed to humidity which can affect other critical components. Hopefully, the technician's "health check" of this piano has been comprehensive.

Good luck with this piano!

Robert.

I'd be thinking that with only 2 pedals that it would be much older than 15 years.

But it looks like it should be a much better proposition than the ZEITTER AND WINKELMANN.

If you can have an independent technician look at it, that would be safest.

Not a bad price, but I'd venture to say that piano is a lot more than 15 years old... of course, I could be wrong.

Good luck!

Get the serial number and look it up on Kawai's website for the age.

Unless you note the serial number of the piano and then consult Kawai's piano age chart according to the serial numbers, you can not be sure of this piano's age. You can find this information on the kawaius.com website under "Technical Support".

Like Rick, I would think that this piano is much older than 15 years. This model is discontinued and the "K.Kawai" on the fallboard is now used only on Kawai grand pianos. All recent Kawai vertical pianos now show just "Kawai".

All the best for your decision.

Robert.

Where did the "about 15 years old" come from? Never mind... smile

I think a pianos age is misrepresented by sellers quite often; either by mistake or by choice. It's up to the prospective buyer to do their homework and find out the real age, unfortunately.

That could still be a very nice piano...

Hi, Music-P,

I have never played a Kawai K80, but if it is anywhere close to the K48, it is likely a very nice piano.

I have a suggestion for you... buy the piano that you really like the best. I know we want advice and assurance from others when we make a big purchase like a piano; but, in the end, it is what your hands will be playing, your ears will be hearing and your eyes will be seeing that matters. smile

Wishing you all the best!

Rick

Well, it's easy to mishear "fifteen" in place of "fifty". As a teenager, my wife loved that Enya song about saving the whales, you know, the one with the lyrics "Save the whales, save the whales, save the whales!" The actual line from the song "Orinoco Flow" is "Sail away, sail away, sail away.
