I consider myself to be an "early intermediate" player.

I just recently purchased a used Kawai CX4 (41"). Very small piano but still a huge upgrade for me from the piano shaped noisemaker it replaced.

I also have a Yamaha PSR190 - 61 key keyboard. It's several years old.

I think I'd like to replace the keyboard with a better quality one that has some touch sensitivity. I don't expect a lot of computer interaction but want that ability, so a MIDI port would be good. Our computers are Macs.

I'll be looking for a used item, and I'm not in a rush. Can anyone make any recommendations? When I look on craigslist, there are huge numbers of listings. Most are for 61-keys, so that eliminates them, I think I want 88, but beyond that, I'm having a tough time even deciding which are worth the drive to look at.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

The predecessors of the CP5 are the P250 and CP300. You could probably get a P250 for not too much money. My local store is still selling the CP300 for roughly what I paid for it when it was first introduced years ago.

You haven't stated how much you're willing to spend but for less than $1,000 you could have a brand new CP33 though it wouldn't have any built in speakers.

There's a P-60 with stand and seat advertised locally for $400.

At this point, I haven't decided what I'm willing to spend, I'm still sort of just watching the ads to try to decide what items I should even look at.

My Kawaii was $950, does around half that for a used item sound reasonable?

I have some qualms, since it electronics in general don't hold their value and when they have problems it's often hard to get things repaired. My piano will probably work just fine for another 20 years but an electronic keyboard probably has a much shorter lifespan.

When I sell any used keyboard I look at anything I receive above 50 percent of the original price as gravy.

Whatever you decide upon ___be sure to play it first___.

Yes, definitely will play it.

I don't really truly need it, it's sort of an indulgence.... but it would be nice to be able to play without bothering others around me. So, I have time to investigate. I think I'll hit a few stores this weekend to try to get an idea of what I like and what I don't.

The selection is pretty amazing.

Thanks!

You haven't really told us what you are looking for. But there are two new models worth considering. If you are looking to stay with a basic model the Casio PX-150 or Yahama P-105 look to be good bets. Both are new models just starting to hit stores now. Both go for $599 and can be bought cheaper when sales are being run. I haven't played either of these yet but have heard a good audio demo of the PX-150 and think it sounds fantastic at this pricepoint. It also has simulated ivory textured keys and a new action. The Yahama is also a nice piano using GHS action. This is a light action but some like it. Haven't heard any sound demos of it. Be careful buying used as some of these can be old and some owners ask way more than their worth. You need to know pricing of older models so you don't pay too much.
