Wasn't there a hypothesis floating around at some point that Chopin's metronome markings were intended as maximum speeds, not suggested speeds? This is perhaps hopeful thinking that doesn't have any historical justification, but I don't remember if it was ever authoritatively debunked.

That's interesting. I've never read that. I have read, however, that Max Reger's metronome markings tended to be at the extreme, and that in performance (piano, organ, orchestral) he never even approached them.
