For a long time now, and for the fun of it, i have occasionally checked ebay to see what grand pianos are for sale. Interestingly enough some really impressive restored and antique models show up from time to time. Others are great pianos that are priced way higher than they should be and even still others stay posted for moths or even years.

However i noticed some ads were from private sellers and on craigslist as well. So i was wondering... in these economic hard times, are private sellers actually able to sell their pianos on ebay or craigslist? Seems every difficult.

As I've said here before, pianos are a lot easier to buy than to sell, whether it be a dealer or a private seller.

In regards to CL and eBay, have you checked the completed transactions on eBay for pianos? Surprisingly, very few actually sell on Ebay, and those that do are usually best-offer type auctions.

This has been discussed before on PW, but I think a lot of dealers, and private sellers, use eBay as more of an advertising service than an auction service.

I initially saw both my grand pianos, (former and current) advertized at auction on eBay. Ironically, neither sold on eBay before the auction ended; however, I was in contact with the sellers but was not able to actually go and look at the pianos in person before the auctions ended. I have also bought, and sold a couple of uprights on Craigslist.

As always, caution is in order when dealing with private sellers (and some dealers smile ).

I bought my upright piano on eBay. It wasn't a big deal. I went around to play it, agreed on a price, called the removal company and agreed to be at the address and watch it be loaded on the truck before I paid the money. I paid cash, but you could just as easily do a wire transfer on a computer while the seller is watching. It's just like any transaction, you have to be careful and protect yourself, but there's no reason to be paranoid about doing business with somebody if you have protections in place.

You were fortunate that the seller agreed to let the movers touch the piano before payment was made. All of the private sale pianos I've purchased, I paid the seller and received a bill of sale before the movers touched the piano.

I suppose method of payment is the part of the transaction that is most sensitive to both buyer and seller.

Ebay final value fee (FVF) would take a big chunk of any high end piano sale.

i found my C7 on ebay, but flew from chicago to LA to audition it. then had to arrange transport back.

it helped that the piano was immaculate, a great price, and the seller (a composer) had put up a sound file of it, had lots of photos, and david anderson had maintained the piano and wrote a review of it.

so if you're patient and willing to travel to audition the piano it can really pay off.

Ian,

It is not uncommon for dealers to list on eBay as it reaches a very large market. When that is the case, I don't see why prep, tuning, and regulation would not be included. Especially with new instruments. With any private sale, it is rarely to never included. If it were listed by a piano tech, it might be.

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

Marty,

My comment relates only to private party sales. Buying from a reputable piano tech, on ebay or elsewhere, can be very good way to buy an instrument.
