I'm gonna wear a scarf for 2 weeks before the show just to be sure... Maybe the weather will be better than last time I came...

Duo Chick / Hancock should be amazing. I have 2 CDs from their tour many years ago and it's really the best piano duo I've heard.

Knotty - good idea with the scarf. Also, on the day, just don't breathe. You and Dave have a good time. We're not jealous at all.

Custard - good idea on the metronome. You're really getting there.

I did a Bach fugue for the recital. Not quite sure why. Somebody pointed this fugue out to me and I thought I'd give it a go. Trouble is with everything, getting a good recording. I need to get my arrangements up on youtube too. Each recording has one mistake.

OK I will look out for it on ABF. I love the Bach fugues from The Well Tempered Clavier especially when played by Keith Jarrett.

Yeah arrangements are a pain to record. That's why I only did one.

Hi !
All the Hanons I've posted were at a challenge tempo. But I think 126 bpm might be my sustain tempo. Do you agree, or do you think my sustain tempo should be slower ?

Lesson 24: Ab maj @ 126 bpm

I can see it. However, it says that's disabled on mobile. So only from a 'non-mobile' device can I see it.

if you go to edit video settings, there's a check box to allow or disallow on mobile. I don't know why you'd have checked that off, but I'm guessing it's checked off.

Hi Dave
I can view your Tristano vid fine.

Hi Knotty
Thanks for reviewing my Hanon. I will spend another few weeks on it to try and get it faster.

Which arrangement did you record then custard?

I submitted my fugue today. Unfortunately it wasn't played by Keith Jarrett.

Also not played by Keith Jarrett is this improv:
http://www.box.net/shared/fu8g136ev0uq0720yx5u

I also recorded the thing I am calling minor-hanon-1-over-ii-V-i-thingy.
http://www.box.net/shared/0hplqayu2x309y9haaxj

I've been doing these in the minor keys knotty mentioned as common. Not spending a lot of time on them, but the fact I still make mistakes (in both hands) means I should probably keep at it. I'm hearing the minor scale a lot better now.

10,

The improv sounded good (at least for the most part). The important thing is that somehow, you seem to are getting the pizza thing much better.
The minor hanon is really wild. Good stuff.

So you did all the major and minor keys and now you're doing both combined? How many keys have you done for that progression? 6 should be enough, probably a couple weeks' worth of practice.

Oh, I'd completely forgotten about the pizza! I was trying to drop my anchor on a downbeat, that's all. I don't want to drop my anchor on a slice of pizza as that would be a shameful waste. wink

What I have 'done' I'm not quite sure, and it does depend on what you mean by 'done'. By now I will have tackled the ii-V-I's in all major keys, and minors (C, D, E, F, G and A). But - and this is a big but - I do need to warm each one up first, I can't just launch straight into it. So I'll revise the chords, the scale, do arps up and down, arps up and scale down, etc before I will improvise happily. Because I have been focussing on the minors then I tend to do the relative major also, but I'm not progressing from one into the other. And by now I have neglected the other major keys.

so I feel like I've done lots and mastered nothing.

This was one question I have for custard - once you've done a key, do you need to go back and refresh it, and if so, how do you manage the workload?

Glad you like the minor hanon. It really was a life-saver. Now I find I do it for the majors too if a key isn't coming, RH hanon 1 over chords, nice and slow. All these drills are not enough in themselves, but they do help with the process.

As always knots, thanks for the input! smile

you'll get lots of refreshers when you work on tunes. I wouldn't sweat it. The idea is to get the sound of the 25 in your head.

Hi 10
For your improv I could tell that you've been working hard at making your phrases sound "ended". Your phrases are sounding complete, like they have a stop.
And I agree with Knotty that your counting in 4s is working well.

No, I did not revise my progressions. You will revise them when you do the combination ones. And as Knotty said, the tunes are a great way to revise them. Is it only the minor ones where you are making mistakes ?

The arrangement was Never Let Me Go. It's not a famous standard. I did the arrangement as I wanted to straight away apply the principles in Dave's masterclass on Bill Evans.

Thanks, custard. Perhaps I should do the combination ones then. Is it the minor going to relative major?

I didn't know this song (Never let me go), but I Bill Evans masterclass is a really inspiring one for arranging.

Edit: lesson 23

Hi 10
It's up to you whether you want to consolidate your minor ones as part of the combination ones or not. How long did you spend on the minor ones ?
The combination ones go from major to relative minor.
e.g. D min 7, G7, C maj 7, C maj 7, B min 7b5, E7 (b9 optional), A min 6, A min6.

Well played and sung for the beautiful Lesson 23 JOI tunes. I especially like the swung triplet for the jazz one.

Hi Simon
Thought you'd wait till after the rugby world cup to make a comeback hey ?! What lesson did you get up to ? I know you were making huge progress.
