I'm very excited and happy about the new Yamaha N1 in my living room: something of a dream come true. However, I have a couple of problems with it:

* The 'E' 2 above Middle C (E5?) sounds as if E6 were playing at the same time (as an octave chord). It's also true for D# and F either side, but less so.

* Playing the second F from the bottom (F2?) causes a very clear 'chirp' sound to come from the right speaker. This is an obvious problem that needs fixing.

The first 'E' issue is the one that's bugging me. Is it just a quirk of the piano? Maybe the samples tend to sound a bit that way? Otherwise, it's everything I hoped it would be.

Any thoughts/advice? I'm getting the store to come back and fix the 'F' issue, but looking for the wisdom of the community (and other N1 owners) on whether to press on the other one.

Are these issues also heard through headphones?

Interesting. Could you make an MP3 recording of these issues and post it here? It might help resolve your case.

Thanks for the ideas:
I listened on headphones: the F2 'chirp' is clearly there, activated when the key is released. If you can tell me how to post an MP3 I have one where you can hear it pretty well.

The 'E' issue (octave chording) isn't present on headphones. I'm guessing (giving the two semitones close to it do the same) that it's a resonance in the speaker box or the instrument itself.

PM me and I'll put it in one of my MediaFire directories. Or you can open your own free account and link to it.

popkid sent me the file and I posted it at MediaFire:

Sounds to me like maybe the key-up sample got scrambled. Thanks popkid, I always find this stuff fascinating!

Sounds very odd! Have you done a factory re-set?

Out of interest, how would I do the factory reset?
I've also seen a lot on the net about upgrading to the latest firmware, but I can't find the files anywhere. Could this help?

I've contacted my dealer and they are planning to replace the motherboard - this is probably the most complete solution, so I'm going along with that.

If that doesn't work, I'll be after a new unit. This one showed up with three issues - the two I described and a poorly manufactured key with a sharp edge.
