Has anyone ever had to fight to retain their beloved piano in a divorce. I have heard of bitter fights over pets, etc. BUT?
Keep in mind, I live in Indiana, and divorces are very common here, I can testify! When I got divorced, My wife knew that the Allen organ and the Holland grill were MINE! LOL

With the price of lawyers these days, another grand makes no difference.

Just don't marry a pianist, cellist, or singer, and you won't have a problem. The reason for not marrying a pianist is obvious.... but cellists will want your piano bench (particularly adjustable, cushy artist benches), and singers just feel entitled to everything (and let's be honest, most can't sing in tune even with a piano, so they need all the pitch reference help they can get)! laugh

Ha Ha. On my customer list, I usually use the name of the lady of the house. My reasoning is the wife gets the kids.....the kids play the piano....so the wife gets the piano........dunno if I'm on track here, but there it is.......

Play it safe: make sure there are his and her pianos in the house. After all, a house isn't a home without two pianos.

One could always divide it up. One takes the bench and hammers. The other takes the strings and music desk.

Many years back I had a client who went through wives (and pianos) at a fairly rapid pace. Over a period of about five years I tuned three different Steinway B's in his home. The first two were walnut and each successive departing wife got one of them. The third was ebony and he managed to keep both the piano and the wife for a couple of years.

We moved on after that so I don't know how longer he was able to keep either.

[fun mode /on]

I am a poor man. A divorce would need to divide the grand. I then would like to own the lower half. Base of it all. Made of VERY thick beams which also could take the loads of a church roof - a BIG church roof.. And: to the lower half will belong the sound board.

A harp I would be able to regain: there is a Steinway dealer in my neighbourhood who has a D size harp in front of his shop - in the mid of the night there would be only three srews to untighten, and a crane then could provide me with a new (old) harp. (acc. to serial number: in such case of a divorce and a halfened future it then would be a Hamburg D from 1916.)
[fun mode /off]

If my (then-ex) wife would have taken away the playing mechanism - no big trouble. There are parts enough for some spare mechanisms.. ;-)

Not that hubby and I are in that boat...

If he tried to take my piano we'd be dealing with murder one, not divorce proceedings. wink

A piano is like a child. What ever happens in the divorce, one spouse gets custody, the other gets visitation rights. The piano will be used by both until death parts the humans from the piano. That's the way it should be.

I never heard of a judge telling the woman that the ex has the priviledge of coming over every week to play "The Old Piano Roll Blues" Imagine if he had to bring a piano "chaperone"?
