I have a limited budget of no more than $3500. I'm looking for a baby grand piano. I found a 1987 black ebony Samick that is in excellent condition. Almost new, barely played.

My daughter is 6 and has only been taking lessons a year. I can get the piano for $3300 with a one year warranty. Do you think this is a good purchase for my situation and budget? I know it is not a top of the line piano but will it work for her needs for the next 10 years of lessons or is it a complete waste of money? HELP PLEASE!!

Welcome to Piano World!

I'm going to be blunt. I wouldn't buy any Samick from 1987. Period. Expecting it to last for 10 additional years is a long shot.

At $3,500 you will be able to find a better, used, small grand which is of much higher quality. You can find something from this century.

Keep looking and you will do a lot better.

Thinking about it more, that would probably be the new price in 1987. That might even be a high guess.

I you tell us where you are located, we might be able to offer additional help.

I would offer about $2,500, a Korean built Samick isn't all that bad at that price IMHO.

I probably wouldn't either. My parents have a Samick from the early 90's and it's not the greatest.

I do know of a couple tools that can help you figure out the depreciation schedule for pianos, courtesy of others here at pianoworld who introduced me to them:

Really, they've depreciated that much?

Private sale? Sure. There was a nice YC Pramberger just a tad older that sold for less.

Without knowing more about the piano, no one can say. However, Samick can be a nice piano; Overs Pianos, of Australia, used acoustic bodies from Samick to make their own high-end custom pianos.... I'm unsure if they still are using bodies from Samick, or if they have switched to total manufacture. The point is, the pianos have potential.

It was an entry level piano then and it's now 25 years old. I did some digging and the list price in 1987 was ~$6K for a 5'-1" which is no longer produced. The MSRPs on new SIG-50's and SIG-54's are only in the $12-14K range.

This is not a Baldwin M1.

Does anyone really think that a piano, nothing like the ones built today, still holds over 50% of its value? We're not talking about one of the great builders here. It was an entry level piano then and it still is.

I've got a low mileage bridge to sell. Wanna buy it?
