Taking music or learning the piano seriously in college or other types of schooling? I was looking into but don't feel I am "ready" or at the appropriate level yet seeing that I have only been playing a short while..

There are lots of good books on basic piano technique at the library. Why don't you start there?

I am almost at the end of Alfred 2. Also, I took lessons for a couple months prior and have been using supplemental materials.

I took 5 books out of the library for practice tips and also brought one, they were useful. Always good to get another opinion.

Was honestly how I got started last semester of school. A few months before Jan. '12, my mom had bought a piano for our living room as decoration, despite there being but not a single person in the family capable of playing. I tinkered with it out of a desire to be able to play video game songs, but found it difficult to learn not being able to read or understand music notation. As such, I found a Beginning Piano class at the local jr. college (even universities offer these for piano proficiency examination preparation required for music majors, though they'll be able to read notation better than you at first) and signed up for it along with a Basic Musicianship online theory course (which I'd definitely recommend taking concurrently) and now, a little over half a year later, I'm taking weekly lessons and am hooked for life! As far as the "seriously" part goes, I'm hoping to, a ways down the road, shape my career around playing in some respect (ie. teaching), though my experience in this particular respect likely isn't "typical."

P.S. and coincidentally my name is also Joe

edit: Oh, I didn't read that you already progressed through the Alfred's books (or at the least the first couple). I'd put you at least in the second semester class for Beginning Piano then (the class series is usually 4 semesters worth; sometimes there are only 2 available at smaller jr. colleges)
