The piano/keyboard is 5 years old. But even Vista isn`t mentioned on the compatable operating systems! Now I have this new computer running Windows 7, would you suggest I treat it as XP sp2 for setting up purposes?
Thought it wise to ask before I jump . . . I know you guys`ll put me right! Thanks. Peter

Is this for USB MIDI? If so, it looks like Windows 7 is supported: http://tinyurl.com/cudco24Greg.

First try just plugging it in. With windows XP I had the worst time with the Kawai USB-MIDI drivers and my MP8. I had to reinstall the driver a million times. And it didn't work without that driver. With windows 7 I just plug in my piano and go. No need for the Kawai drivers or anything else. Not sure whether Vista is closer to XP or 7 in this respect.

Did you try that link that sullivang gave ya?? http://download.yamaha.com/search/p...;category_id=16086&product_id=105576There's a driver you need to install for win7 at that link. Once you do, your piano will talk to your pc just fine. I use one of those digitals at piano lesson (argh) and it talks to my laptop perfectly which is running win7 64 bit.

This is the big scary thing they don't tell you about MIDI via USB: it's often implemented in a proprietary fashion, so the port may become completely useless with the next OS release if the manufacturer doesn't maintain the driver set. Manufacturers drop support for slightly older models like hot potatoes.
And they seem to roll out new, incompatible OSes every other Tuesday. Isn't it time the world picked an OS and just stuck with it until the entire hardware paradigm shifts (quantum computing, etc.)? Or at least make it so drivers generally survive the next data width bump?

Aye; I did try the link and downloaded the stuff. What I expected to happen was for the computer to be able to playback the song on the memory stick used with the 620. It did on my Vista Lappie, but won`t even do that now.
So I`m looking to convert a SMF-O FILE into an audio one. Which can be simply edited.
Thanks for the info; much appreciated! Keep it coming .. .

Which manufacturers do that? Yamaha doesn't. You can still get the MIDI driver for Windows 98, even today! Manufacturers drop support for slightly older models like hot potatoes.

Which would be relevant if I was talking about finding old OS drivers for old equipment. It's new OS drivers for older equipment that can often be problematic.

All of the Yamahas use the same driver, with version variation for each OS: one for x64 systems, another for x32 systems, and one for the Satanic systems (98 and Me).
So, I can use a 10-year-old Yamaha piano with Windows 7, or a brand new piano with Windows 98 ... just install the appropriate driver.
That might not be true for Kawai/Roland/Casio. But for Yamaha, the point is moot.

Kawai DPs will use the built-in Windows driver, which should install automatically.
If there are any issues with the built-in Windows driver, a separately, standalone driver (separate versions for 32bit and 64bit) can be downloaded from one of the Kawai websites.
Cheers, James x

Well, I must say, it all seems a bit complicated for an ole b*gger like me, ladies/gentlemen. . . All I want if the truth is known, is an audio file of the memory stick song content. Low tech and all that . .then I can ave fun pulling it about a bit on an audio mixer unit . . Heck, I`ll be asking for floppy discs next!

peterws: I think the DGX-620 can only record MIDI. So, you can transfer your performance to a flash drive, but there's no sound. You'd have to play it back through the piano ... or plug it into your computer and play it through a piano library. Until your "render" the MIDI, there is no sound to "pull about on an audio mixer".

Are you referring to the MIDI driver issue, or the MIDI recording issue?

All I want if the truth is known, is an audio file of the memory stick song content. If all you want to do is record an audio file, run a cable from the headphone output of the DGX620 into the audio input of your computer, and use whatever audio program you like on your PC to record it. MIDI/USB connection from your DGX620 is irrelevant for audio recording.

This is the big scary thing they don't tell you about MIDI via USB: it's often implemented in a proprietary fashion, so the port may become completely useless with the next OS release.. There is a standard way to send MIDI over USB. I think most new pianos use that standard. If you have a any Mac or a newer version of Windows those OSes know about the standard and do not require special drivers If your older piano has "real MIDI". That means those two round 5-pin DIN jacks that you can ALWAYS get the piano to work with any computer. What you get is a MIDI to USB cable. These cables like the "Uno" use the standard and modern OSes will not require a driver to use the cable.

Glad I could help! Yup, for audio recording, you don't need to deal with MIDI at all. MIDI is for recording data, not sound. The kinds of things MIDI recording lets you do include altering notes after you've "recorded" them, or choosing to play the song back using some different sound (i.e. if you later decide you'd like to hear the piece played with an Electric PIano sound instead, or with the piano sound of some other keyboard entirely). But MIDI data itself contains no sound whatsoever. To hear it, the MIDI file has to be played back through some kind of sound generator. So if you want to be able to hear the DGX sound when the DGX is not physically connected to the computer, you need to record its Audio, not it's MIDI data... indeed, the same way you would in the days of the tape recorder.
