I know the price is very hard to know without actually being revised by a technician, but here in Mexico that´s not that easy!!

Dear Al,

Thank you for the dropbox. It appears that you have a Hamburg built Steinway O.

For it's age, it looks quite nice. It has obviously had work done to it at some point, but when discussing rebuilding work, it must be seen in person. It is not enough to see that a particular part was or was not replaced. You are buying the rebuilder as much as you are the piano.

I have met with people very recently who made a terrible choice by judging a piano from a picture and a video.

This is not a judgement that could be made from a photo... or a video.

The piano was from my great grand mother since new, it has never been repaired nor work done.. my grand mother received it as a heritage and in the last 20 years it has been played for at most 5 times.. I know... it´s a shame!! I would love to keep it, but she needs to sell it, and if that's the price, I could, I tought it worth a lot more.. so I could not buy it from her..

Have your uncle handle its sale and bid what you can afford. I bet you will get the piano for just the lack of other interested parties.

I lived in Mexico and am there now. I know your problems with tech's and family.

What someone would pay for it also depends on where it is. A Hamburg Steinway fetches a bit more than a New York Steinway in the US, but in most of the rest of the world, they are about all that is available. Sam Bennett's estimate is probably realistic.

Greetings,
That looks like a New York piano to me. The squareness of the cheeks, and the inclusion of the aliquot bars at this age work against it being a Hamburg piano. I am not sure about the plate bolts, those look European.
I think that piano would be worth 10K on the casual market, more like 7K to a rebuilder if he had a market. I would bet money the action is suffering verdigris.
Regards,

No backplate on the pedals, and inlaid brass lettering on the fallboard say Hamburg.

So at most $15,000 usd is what she can get... well let me see if I can convince her to sell it to me..

Thank you very much for you time, and also I dont think it has verdigris, or at least it's not at first sight, to be honest it's in excellent shape..

No backplate? What is a backplate? This piano has an enclosed pedal box just like countless New York pianos of the vintage have. Presently in the shop, model 0, # 120048. in living room, # 78886, Pedal boxes just like this one.
I can't personally tell if the fallboard has brass or not. I don't know if the piano was ever refinished. I also don't remember seeing the square cheek corners on a Hamburg piano.

Have you ever seen a NY Steinway where the pedals are not attached to a metal plate which screws to the lyre? If I have seen any, they predate the original A, B, C, and D models. This piano does not have one, which was only done in Hamburg. While there are Hamburg pianos with the plate, I do not think there are NY grands without.

That is the inlaid Hamburg lettering, with the curvy diagonal on the "N"s. NY used decals with straight "N"s.

Ed,

I noticed the square arms but then saw the music rack, a popular design in Hamburg, and the dealer tag on the half lid, also a European thing and I called it a Hamburg.

At a second look... I am not so sure.

Also, the action looks so new for its age, as does the finisb. The OP says there was never any work done, but again... I am not so sure. smile

Is the fallboard lettering unique?

"Imagine it in all its primatic colorings, its counterpart in our souls - our souls that are great pianos whose strings, of honey and of steel, the divisions of the rainbow set twanging, loosing on the air great novels of adventure!" - William Carlos Williams

I see other clues that point to Hamburg. The grain on the case veneer is vertical. On the fallboard logo, Steinway lyre is below the name, not above. NY legs on larger pianos of that era had "picture frame" applique on legs. The smaller ones had straight lines carved in, framing each panel. NY from that era have a cap on top of the outer rim where it gets slightly thicker. The shape of the horizontal panels on the music desk is also wrong for NY.

As I stated before, this piano has never seen any work done, it has been in a living room for the last 30 years, and extremely rarely been played, always closed and since the climate over here is not humid I think that helped a lot, we have an annual average of 50% relative humidity at most. Any way keep 'em comming, I'm learning a lot..

Best Regards,

I looked back at the pictures again (just for fun). This is a Hamburg model O, definitely.

alcastan - this is only based on what I can see, but it certainly appears that the action is not 90 years old. It could be that your camera makes the piano appear in newer condition than it truly is. I have never seen such white shanks in a 90 year old piano.

I wish you luck with this piano and if you have someone look at it, please let us know the results.
