I'm gluing on damper felts for a Steinway L at home and can't remember exactly how many dampers there are in the tenor section. My memory is not so good these days.

Anyone know off hand? TIA

Reminds me of a joke - a man went to the Doctor and said that he had a problem remembering things. The Doctor asked him how long he's has the problem, to which the man answered "What problem?"

Sound familiar?

Stay tuned.

Hi Tom :

I assume that you've stripped all the old felt off and haven't kept each section separate. In which case you should just count the bushing in that section of the damper guide rail. If you haven't got the piano in front of you though, you could always ask the client to count them for you. wink

If you need to know how many wedge felts they used, that has varied from time to time.

I always use the felts sold by Steinway, they are sold pre cut and are exactly what is needed. (in terms of quality, fiber orientation, thickness) they are very precisely cut for the heads, no need to count

The underfelt is not provided so I have to glue it.

The cost of the box of Steinway felt is really not more than from Renner or another provider, anyway that is in France.

Same for a few other, the plate felts and downbearing cloths are a little more, but strips for the end of the keys are not too expensive too (and they are the correct thickness and quality, I often find Steinways where the rebuilder used a thinner felt , often too soft).

I seem to understand that the NY factory is selling at a very expensive price the parts, (as here) but may be not the felts..
