I've heard about Mr. Fandrich, from his posts here and from Perri Knize's book. I just looked at his website, and the first thing that struck me about his pianos, particularly the grands, is how inexpensive they are. How are they as instruments? Does anybody have one? I particularly like the idea of supporting "Made in America" as it were.

It's two different Fandriches. Darrell is the one that is building and selling pianos as Fandrich and Sons. Del Fandrich is a rebuilder, consultant to other piano builders and a valued member here on PW. At one time they were both involved in the making and selling of the Fandrich Piano but now are two separate business entities with different focuses. There's a short and more detailed history on the Fandrich and Son's piano website.

Two more facts. The Darrell Fandrich and Sons pianos are not American made instruments, they are imported pianos that he then customizes considerably. Also, if you want a piano designed by Del Fandrich, you can either look into the Walter's 6'4" grand, or the Young Chang Webers. While you will probably pay a premium price for the Walter piano, the Weber is an incredible value for the money.

...and the Walter 175 grand (still one of my favorite designs).
