It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
Hi Monica! I've been keeping busy. I just got a grant for the Joseph Achron Society, which I founded a few years ago, to publish all of Achron's string quartets. Most of them were never published before, which is quite surprising, because they're really quite good! I'm also working at the National Yiddish Book Center this summer and trying to read as many Yiddish novels as I can -- I started with a children's fantasy novel (Yingele Ringele), which was really delightful. They have such an amazing collection. In the fall I'm starting my graduate studies in musicology. Best of all, though, I have access to a piano this summer -- I'd been piano-less for 3 years! It's nice to get back to composing/playing a little. I've missed it.
I always think I'll get back into the groove of Piano World -- one of these days!
I heard Hamelin play that live as an encore at the Mannes IKIF a while ago. He introduced it by saying "This is for those of you that think you know Jeux d'eau". I think Hamelin likes to play humorous stuff, mostly as encores, maybe more than any other pianist. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUPufOpDU88
