Hi,

I have been looking to buy, get a deal really, a quality acoustic piano in very good to excellent condition. From this experience I get the impression that piano tuners know much more about pianos in general than piano players.
So one piano tuner tells me that if you open the top of the piano, and look down inside you will see pieces that extend from the outward keys of the piano, back inside. If these pieces only go about half way to the back inside wall then the piano is a spinet, I am told. If, however, these pieces go all the way back to the back wall, then you do not have a spinet.

Here is a link to an image of a piano I recently looked at:

http://buffalo.craigslist.org/msg/3053149810.html

It has the Baldwin Classic logo on it with serial # 1467071; Style # 633. A reputable local tuner tells me it looks like a console. But when I look down from the top, I can't tell how far back the pieces noted above extend since mechanism blocks my view. But for sure they don't go all the way to the back. The tone of the piano is what I would expect from a spinet, but the owner tells me it hasn't been tuned in over ten years and it occurred to me that maybe that accounts for the poorer tone.

Can anyone tell me if this is a spinet? If not, would this piano be classified as a console?

Some of those are console sized but are fitted with a drop action.

I don’t believe the mechanism would not block the view of the end of the key if it was a drop.

And some have keys that dive under the action

Early Baldwins, before about 1970, were all drop actions with wooden stickers. You can see a wooden rail with guide pins sticking up above the end of the keys in front of the action. Then they went to wire stickers, with rubber grommets in metal forks at the end of the keys. Then they started using some console actions, which rest on top of the keys.

Thanks a lot for your responses! I believe the piano is about 25 years old.
A major concern is the tone of the piano. It has this almost tinny sound. Is it possible that all it needs is a good tuning to bring back the tone since this is hardly the tone quality I would expect from a Baldwin console.

It might need tuning, regulating and voicing. You may need an evaluation by a technician.

It is always a good idea NOT to take the word of any piano owner selling their own piano. If they say it's been tuned yearly, it's more than likely, not true, intentional or not. Best of have a tech look at it to be safe.

You have come to the right place.
You could also say that car mechanics usually know much more about cars than taxi drivers.... thumb laugh
