I know there was a long thread about updating firmware. Could someone please tell me what usb flash drives that are NOT "U3."

I have files to update firmware and downloaded a compatible USB flash drive list from Yamaha but as usual they don't make it easy to understand. Could someone please consider me a 5 year old and give me the easy answer.

thanks,

I think the easiest approach is to simply try one of the flash drives you have around your house see if that works. I wouldn't go out and buy the latest flash drive, I'd use an older one.

We must have five flash drives all over the house and they all work though I haven't used them for the OS update only to copy midi information from the N3. (As I recall I had to rename to file extension to get it to work on my computer.)

I've been going through this the last couple days, trying to figure out what works best for our N3. Yesterday, I went to Fry's and purchased a handful of their cheapest flash drives ($4.99 each), which were a little Kingston 4GB drive. I've been having issues with some files not working. In any event, here is how I organized these drives:

- dedicated drives for each composer, with nothing on the drive but ~99 .midi files (downloaded from http://www.piano-midi.de/midi_files.htm if anyone cares)
- no subfolders, no other files, etc. (even though subfolders do work)
- renamed files to be less than 8 characters (silly, but it seems to work), plus the extension

So far, it seems to work very well. My wife was not thrilled about buying the AvantGrand N3 after we sold our old Steinway M project piano (think rusty old Camaro in the front yard, covered by blankets, and needing work). In any event, this has become her favorite feature with the N3. Very good stuff.

I'm still searching for a "midi radio" solution for the N3, short of a $1k+ Yamaha Disklavier solution. If anyone has any great ideas... I'd love to hear them.

Brian

I have a question about the upgrade process for Avantgrand. I reformatted a USB flash drive to FAT16. Now should I have the files in the folder that was created by upzip process?

What's a 'midi radio". You mean some kind if wireless midi connection. Yes you can buy those

When he wrote 'midi radio' I interpreted that to mean playing back midi performances using a flash drive - having dozens of midi files as a playlist. ... ?

Sorry, I was thinking of something like a Disklavier Radio (in the traditional "radio station" context), where you have a stream of broadcast music that your piano can play. I.e., it's playing a stream of selected music of the internets as opposed to something you loaded on an USB drive.

That being said, I finally figured out the USB random playback on my AvantGrand it is great.

Anyone? Can someone who has updated firmware respond to my question?

thanks
