I understand the phrase "love song" doesn't hold much water in the context of classical piano, so allow me to define it as any piece that you, the forum goer, finds melancholic, romantic, reminiscent of some warm summer's eve, or evoking emotions of love or affection.

I'm looking mainly for pieces from the Romantic Era and contemporary pieces, but any other pieces from any other epochs are welcome too smile

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated

La Campanella and Chopin Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2. I also like Mariage d'Amour by Paul de Senneville(performed by Clayderman).

EDIT:I also like Music of the Night from the Phantom of the Opera, but one would need to have seen the musical or heard the song before.

No, not if you can read music.

Ah, I seem to have come across the wrong way. I think that the listener should have heard the song before to get the full blow of it.

If you have the technique for it, try the Andante from Brahms' F-minor sonata:

I adore that movement. It's one of my favourites of all the piano literature. So beautiful and a rather good suggestion.

Liszt's Sonetti 47, 104, 123 del Petrarca are the best love songs for piano that I know. They're inspired by 3 sonnets by Italian Renaissance poet Francesco Petrarca in which he meditates on his passionate love for Laura (who was already the wife of a Count). History has it that the affair was platonic, but the music is lush and indulgent and wonderful to play heart

Can you tell us what you're going to do with these pieces (inquiring minds would like to know smile

Forget piano. Get a lute or mandolin and go sing under her window. Chicks love that kind of thing.

Land of the never-ending music
Maybe one of Schubert's Songs, like Sehnsucht der Liebe, D. 180, Liebestandelei, D. 206, Sprache der Liebe, Op. 115, No. 3, D. 410, Sei mir gegrüsst, D.741, Op.20, No.1.
Or does it have to be only piano? (You can play only the piano part anyway if you want of course.)

I find it curious that "melancholic" would be equated to "love song". Anyway...

There's a fantastic "love song" in Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, with the subtitle "Duetto". One of Schumann's Romances (in F#?) is also in the same lovey-dovey spirit. The slow movement of Schumann's 2nd sonata also fills the bill, I think. I'm too lazy to fetch the score to identify them, but some of Rachmaninoff's preludes also seem to have that "love song" quality - in op. 23 there are the ones in D and Eb, and the last one, too.

I'm amazed that this work is so relatively unknown and unplayed. I only know it from one of the 'Great Pianists of the 20th Century' sets devoted to Gilels - what a marvelous recording. I actually prefer the 2nd Concerto to the 1st; I've never been terribly enthralled by the 1st.

I'm feeling very misanthropic this morning. Are there any hate songs?

Perhaps the Queen of the Night's aria from Die Zauberflöte.

Many have said Liebestraum already, so let me suggest Un Sospiro. I find it achingly beautiful.

Debussy's Clair de Lune as well.

Liszt has written a beautiful piano solo transcription of "Sei mir gegrüsst."

Let's also not forget my favorite piece of music is technically a love song of sorts:

A song of seduction that turns into a "hate song," like Palindrome was talking about. You get the best of both worlds! Ahhh what a work of genius.
