Whenever I alternate between depressing two pairs of keys, one of which has my ring finger pressing down on a key, my ring finger starts to hurt (specifically the proximal phalange: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...220px-Scheme_human_hand_bones-en.svg.png). I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this because it seems to be preventing me from progressing smoothly to the next phrase of the piece which also involves alternating between another two pairs of keys.

Are you alternating between the ring finger and a neighboring finger? I don't know exactly what you mean. Try explaining it more specifically. It sounds to me like it's pain resulting from poor technique and/or overplaying, especially with poor technique - that can really cause problems.
