Tell us about your piano and musical experience!

ABF Survey 2012

It's a Google Docs form, which is probably the easiest and quickest and cheapest way to do a survey of a lot of people. There are more questions than last year - I remembered to ask about gender this time, and I think I included all the suggested questions.

You can see the responses here:

ABF Survey 2012 - responses

We've done this before - here are the responses from last year:

ABF Survey 2011 - responses

And yes, you can answer the survey more than once, but why would you? It's not exactly scientific, but it is a lot of fun...

Enjoy!
Sam

Reading and participating in both 2011 & 2012 polls was the direct reason why i registered. Thank you Sam. I can see by the results i am in good company. I also must appologize. I joined after taking the poll, thus skewing the results a very small bit. Thanks again

Filled one out. Too bad there was no free form type section for feedback/suggestions.

I love ABF and the recitals in particular. But being a newbie I find the recital review thread to be hard to get a good overview of. Your page with recital statistics is a true gold mine. I just wish the recital reviews could be arranged differently to allow the reviews to be grouped by performance as they are on Amazon or IMDB for example. That would be the icing on the cake!

I've often thought that myself! There must be some way to do that. Google docs could probably allow for separate reviews for each performance, but then there wouldn't be the discussion here. I'm sure someone here will figure out a way to do this within a couple years. It can't be too difficult...but it is for me smile

2/3rds of us are male? (at least so far). Don't know why that is so surprising to me, but it is. Maybe the numbers will improve - lets hear from the females!

Thanks for doing this again!!!

The female/male ratio is changing, just now it was 48%/52% (female/male).

I like the new questions. I am sure there are many other questions that could be added, and after a certain point, keeping it short is probably better. But! Having said that, since you asked about playing by ear, maybe next year you could also ask about sightreading ability, and then maybe a question about ability in both areas.

Another interesting question would be how many teachers people have had, or something that assessed how long it took the person to find a compatible teacher.

Also, it might be interesting to hear where people get their sheet music (in score books, digitally by the sheet, free sheets only, purchasing copyrighted sheets etc) And where do people learn about music they might want to play...

Ok, I'll stop! smile The Survey is fantastic as is! smile

Welcome, Farmerjones. smile

These results are interesting. Sometimes I think y'all are so much more experienced than me, but I see there are lots of true beginners around too. A good mix of experience levels.
