The best reason to have two pianos is that you can play Mozart's Piano Sonata for Two Pianos (K. 448) with someone. It is one of the most glorious pieces of piano music ever.

Why stop at two? There are three pianos in this house, plus a Hammond organ.

How about a 7'4" semi-concert grand, a 45" studio upright, a 48" professional upright and an 88 weighted key digital stage piano. Not to mention a 5-string banjo, a full size violin and an acoustic guitar… my nephew has my mandolin borrowed. Rick

You can never be too rich or too thin or have too many pianos.

....As Judy Tenuta says.... Love her too! Would love to go to one of her shows -- been looking for her for years -- but she seems to have sort of disappeared, hasn't she?

Or not having to share a piano when playing Mozart's sonata for four hands, K. 381.... I know, I know, it was written for one piano, but I like my space! It also comes in handy for concerto work.

I think he meant those things not to have the "space"! You need to imagine yourself not minding being 'accidentally' intimate with the other person.

You can play concerti. It is a major luxury for advanced students to be able to rehearse concerti without having to wait for tightly scheduled cramped practice rooms.

I have two pianos for the same reason as people have two staircases. One for playing scales up, another one for playing them down. I mean, doesn't everybody do that?
Some men are music lovers. Others make love without it.

The older I get, the more moody I get… Lately, I have to be in the mood to do most anything that is not mandatory, especially if it involves any physical effort or critical thinking. If I’m in a sophisticated, elegant kind of mood, I’ll play my grand piano; if I’m in a classical or cultured mood, I’ll play my Kawai upright; if I’m in a bluesy, jazzy kind of mood, I’ll play my Baldwin upright. If I feel a little feisty and want to play some oldies rock-n-roll, I’ll play the one that is the closest. If I really want to go wild and don’t care if I break something, I’ll play my digital… Rick

I have 3 great pianos but have a hard time getting musician friends to come play duets. Maybe offer food or booze? LOL

I have been thinking about throwing a symphony party sometime, inviting a bunch of pianists to play duet versions of symphonies. That only requires one piano, though. The problem is that most of the good pianists I know are scared of sight-reading.
