i've always know about this piece due to it's popularity but have never really given it a decent listen. is there a general consensus as to the best performance of this? if that was a stupid question, could you just link me to you favorite rendition?

Olga Kern's CD of it is simply out of this world. If you can find it, give it a listen - it is worthy of any music collection.

There'll be a new best version when I play it at the amateur Chopin competition this September. ha

(just kidding, just kidding!)

IMO the best version was by Horowitz. I hadn't known he recorded it, and it's not commercially available. It was put on youtube a couple of years ago, then for some reason mysteriously taken off. cry

It's on volume 48 of Philips "Great Pianists of the 20th century" series (Horowitz II)

Here's a LINK to a commercially available CD. Or, in other words, you're wrong! laugh

Ha, Horowitz is the only reason I like Chopin.

....I would also honestly say that this other recording, by one of our own members, is in the running for very best:

by "Vica"

He's a member who modestly understated how good he is -- by a lot.

"Vica" hasn't posted here since 9 June, 2010. I listened to the Fantasy and it is, indeed, superbly played.

Julius Katchen has a sensitive and beautiful performance of this piece - my personal favorite.

Nice collection here! smile
I agree with Pianogrl that the Rubinstein is wonderful.

Another favorite of mine is Cliburn, from the album titled (what else!) "My Favorite Chopin."

It's sort of the opposite of Horowitz's wild interpretation: elegant, flowing, and controlled throughout. I love them both.
