Hi all,

I'm new. I've always wanted to learn to play piano, and additionally I have two young children who I would also like to be able to learn. So, I'm looking for a good digital piano (since we don't have the space for an analog).

I came across a used Kawai CA-61 for $2100. Is this a good price? Is this worth purchasing given you could buy a new CE-220 or maybe CN-33 for around the same or less? If it's too much, then what would you consider to be a fair price?

I've been researching for a while, and I think I've decided I'd like to get a Kawai or a Roland (but leaning towards the Kawai).

Perhaps you could check out some of your local dealers first to see if there is something out there for the same price

Also, just know that warranties dont normally transfer between owners so I am always weary of buying used electronics if they cost more than $100

The CA61 was a US-only model that essentially added the CA91's soundboard speaker to the CA51. This instrument also features the AWA Grand II wooden-key keyboard action, which is still very highly regarded.

However, that generation of CA instruments (CA51/61/71/91) utilised the older 'Harmonic Imaging' sound technology, before Kawai adopted the more modern 88-key piano sampling process. So while the CA61's keyboard action and speaker system are very good, the core sound is rather dated.

The CE220 uses the same wooden-key keyboard action as the CA61, but does not include the soundboard speaker. However, it does feature the vastly improved 'Progressive Harmonic Imaging' sound technology, with 88-key sampling, allowing for a far more expressive and realistic sound.

The CN33 also uses the same sound technology, however the keyboard action is quite different - the plastic key 'RH' action.

Even though the CA61's soundboard speaker is a premium feature, I don't believe the instrument is worth $2100, especially when a brand new CE220 (with better sound technology) can be purchased for under $1900.

If you're keen to purchase a Kawai, I would also consider visiting your local dealer to see if they would be prepared to offer a good deal on the CA63, which would be a further step-up from the CE220.

Yes, that is very helpful...

I actually tried to stop by my local Kawai dealer, but they had already closed. I peeked thru the window and they had the CN23/33/43 on display at pricing which was about the same as factory direct through Kawai.

I would be interested in a CA63 - I'll check to see what pricing they offer (although I'm thinking it will be quite a bit higher).

I guess I could also lean toward a Roland (their RP-301R seems pretty nice, as do their HP 500 series). If anybody has any constructive comparison (pros/cons) between these and the Kawais I would appreciate it.

Ken, you may wish to have a quick search through the Digital Prices Paid Thread to get a rough idea of what folks are paying for their pianos. Armed with this information, you may be able to talk the dealer down from their current prices - the obviously applies to Kawai, Roland, Yamaha, and other brands' instruments.

I haven't played the new Roland HP-500 series, but the previous generation HP-300 models were very competitive with the equivalent Kawai and Yamaha models. The RP-301/R is also a relatively new instrument (I believe the 'R' on the end indicates that the models includes drum rhythms), but by all accounts is a very attractive entry-level instrument at a good price.

Unless you're in a hurry to buy, I would spend a while visiting the different stores in your area and play-testing as many instruments as possible. And of course, be sure to read through the relevant posts here on PianoWorld.
