Here is a pic of my wall. the piano movers hit my wall with the piano lid but amazingly I could not see any damage or scratches on my lid. only the wall took damage haha.

The wood must be really dense stuff it is HEAVY!

Congratulations, it's a beauty.
The movers must be very confident transporting such a high end instrument without the lid and fallboard and without wrapping it in blankets.

Beautiful piano, for sure, but who are those movers? It is unheard of to transport an instrument without wrapping and protecting it thoroughly. It has nothing to do with being confident in your moving skills. Anyone who's done it for any length of time knows that there are all sorts of hazards that can, and do, occur when moving a piano....especially of that size. Also, the straps look loose in the photos. Anyway, best of luck with an incredible piano. Glad it got there safely!!

I don't see any photos of that odd looking blue hoist/mini-crane actually being used with the piano...too nervous?

Really beautiful

During the crane operation I was filming it using my camera. I'll post a video once I upload it. it took 2 attempts haha.

Yeah, I was really surprised that they didnt wrap it up in blankets , etc... It didnt end up with any scratches, but some marks where the belts were attached to the piano. They will be polished off next week free of charge.

Chopinlover, the belts were only used for the crane so there is some slack to attach to the crane hook. After it got up the 2nd story, it was pushed up another set of stairs and finally in position.

Congratulations!

I'm a fan of the Shigeru-Kawai line, particularly the SK-7.

You have bought a really wonderful piano.

I still remember the experience of playing one on stage in Beijing. The action of that piano was extraordinarily responsive; even the pedals felt great. There was a wonderful shimmering quality to the high treble; the bass was very clear, and of course, the middle section sang.

That piano worked just fine in a hall that seated over 1000 people. I'm sure, in the more intimate setting of your home, that the sound will be spectacular in its clarity and detail.

Enjoy!

That is quite the piano! Congrats and I love your floor too. Frames the piano very nicely! But I have to agree, these movers would scare any piano buyer.... Especially a with piano of this category... Thanks for sharing!

Yes please post the video.. I was going to ask about the the piece of equipment. Beautiful piano. Did you get to play on the patio?

Congratulations!

I was just curious as to why the legs are not fluted, why the mover was moving the piano w/o the lid and the fallboard. So, I wanted to know where the country is.

Steering wheels of the cars in the photos are on the wrong side, men are whites and they are in summer clothes. So I narrowed to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. According to the license plate of two cars in the photos, I guess it is Australia.

good detective skills, masaki I'm in Aust.

I asked for square legs mainly because it is cheaper and I like the look of it better than the round legs. I think these legs were taken off a RX7 piano.

The lid had to be removed because of the dolly they used. you can see this in the video that I will post later.

The fallboard can be removed by just sliding it up, so maybe they it could fall out during transportation? i duno

This one is new, I had my eye on it when it came to Australia for 2 weeks in the dealer shop. It's been at the dealer for about 2 and a bit months when I bought it. I don't want one in the box, it would require ordering, waiting, etc and it may be slightly different to the one I play at the dealer. btw, I duno about your area, but ordering a new piano and buying the display piano is exactly the same price here.

Hopefully will get a video up of the move tomorrow!

The piano is not in tune atm, tuner is coming next week! surprised that the tune will change so much after a move. I always thought only the super pedantic people would tune it after a move but some treble trichords are off and can hear beats for a few notes.

according to the serial number i saw on your piano.. it was made between 2008-2009.. the model i saw here in southern california was a 2012 model. i think the main differences were cosmetic but it was 5k more ( i would confirm with Kawai though). changes includes newly designed inner rim coloring, logos, legs, and a few other things

SKs available in Japan have square legs and square lyre pillars. It might be that your SK7's legs and the lyre pillars are genuine SK components. I can hardly imagine the RX's lyre pillars do fit to SK's lyre box.

When I ever saw the round and fluted legs in some photos posted by some SK owners in the US, I felt "too fancy!". So did, when I saw the inner rim of the 2012 version of SKs.

I guess the tuner you are expecting next week is not an MPA, but a man who is supposedly provide only tuning and action adjustments only to cover the period until the MPA visit, which will not be in a few months, but after several months. I would suggest you not to ask the non-MPA tuner for jobs that require higher skills than he has.

The Australian Shigeru Kawai website lists two non-Japanese men who are presumably the MPA people for Australia. Both these technicians, according to their résumés, have had extensive experience with Kawai in Japan.

In Auckland, New Zealand, the Shigeru Kawai MPA is also a local person who may or may not be as good as the genuine article from Japan.

Regards,

Robert.

I'll have to ask the dealer (or call up kawai). He told me 2 and a bit months old (on the day I bought it), but since it is only cosmetic differences, I don't really care since im happy with this version. Before buying I did check the serial number though and saw 2008-2009 on the kawai US site. there was no serial reference list on the AU site so I thought it might have different serial number conventions here.

Would you happen to have a photo of the new inner rim? I am very interested to see what it looks like.

The tuner next week is not a MPA. I get 4 'free tunings' and one MPA visit. There is a MPA in Sydney so he might fly over here or one from Japan might fly here (this is what the dealer told me).

Ah I see. Actually I saw something very similar on some Bernstein (essentially a rebadged Hailun) pianos (I played a few during my search for a piano) It looks pretty cool there is some sort of 3D effect when looking at different angles right?
having said that though, I prefer the darker colour rim in the 'older sk models'

The rim materials in all of the SK are the same right? just the veneer changed?

I like the new logo on the plate it looks much better than the embossed logo on the plate.

btw Thanks for the link masaki.

oh yeah talking about cosmetics on a piano, one thing I Reallly wanted on the SK7 but is not there is the side decal as seen in the SKEX model. Kawai and Yamaha only have side decals for the flagship models. Petrof has if for all of their Master series (Monsoon, Mistral and Pasat)

That was one of the most harrowing things I've ever witnessed. Your Kawai dealer is out of his mind using these guys to move his pianos!!

Wow!!!... You had the perfect day for piano moving.

I agree!

Those first few minutes were one scary suspense flick. [Linked Image]

I mean it! Even though I figured the outcome couldn't have been too bad, I was just about as scared as with a Hitchcock movie.

haha, at least the piano was fully insured by the movers!

yeah that week rained a lot. it just happened to be not raining on that day which was really good!

If I ever move house or need to relocate the piano, I'll probably call some different guys, I watched other videos of piano moves and they seemed to take much more care for the piano, eg. wrapping it up, using some lyre jigs instead of lyre tipping.

they did claim that they were the 'only ones' that can do a move like this. I'm pretty sure many other movers can also do it but since they are fully insured, I guess I can relax a little.

I got to give them some credit though, The piano went to the 2nd story using a crane and another set of stairs up to the piano room without significant damage. there were some marks where the belts strapped on to the piano when hoisting it up though. They'll get those marks sorted out this week.

zerox61, it scared the daylights out of me to watch that. If it were my piano, I don't think I could have watched. I am glad your fine instrument is mostly undamaged in spite of the movers' best efforts.

OG Ryder,

The sound is awesome (although out of tune). I bought a nice rug and stuck it under the piano. I don't really hear and differences but that may be because I haven't played enough to get used to the sound without rug before sticking one in.

The action is really nice. I noticed that I could hear the action mechanism clicking away as I play in the high treble when lifting up really quickly. I'm not sure if this is normal (as in this volume of the action) but either way, I'm sure the MPA would sort it out on his visit.
I also noticed that when I do staccato on the bass side, the keys will jiggle up and down (maybe 2-3 small jiggles) due to momentum. I don't recall my upright doing that but since it is such a different piano, I can't really compare.

When I go play my Yamaha C108 it makes it feel like a little toy haha. We will probably keep the yamaha at the moment instead of selling it because the 'practice pedal' is good for late night practice runs!

Probably keep the C108 until I get a decent keyboard though.

I suppose this is the technician in me talking, but I hope you keep the shades closed in that room. That sunlight on the piano makes it look pretty, but it's not going to help tuning stability any! smile

Which leads to a question I've been wondering about.

Is it 'just' tuning stability that is a problem from that, or does it also sort of ruin the piano?

I've been concerned about this because it took a while for me to realize that this was an issue, and for some years, my current piano was getting sunlight like that.

Sunlight, in this environment, represents radiated heat over a large body (the piano). This type of heating is very uneven and will affect both the temperature (and therefore dimensional stability of the structure) and the flow of moisture. That will damage the piano, potentially shortening its life and requiring more maintenance (tuning + nuisance issues). I suggest using common sense to mitigate the sunlight coming in. A simple test is to place your hand on the sunny part of the piano. If it feels noticeably warmer than the non-sunny parts, you're not doing enough to mitigate.

Important note:

For the money you paid I sure wouldn't have let ANYBODY move that piano until it was fully wrapped up and blanketed first, as you could have avoided those strap marks, too!

Did these movers offer you a cheaper price on account of their verbal assurance they could do the job without damages?

Sounds completely unprofessional, to me...

pv88,

Actually, I have not spoken to the piano movers about price. it was all arranged by the dealer as part of my deal. The estimated price was ~$600 for the move (most expensive was crane hire) according to the dealer.

about the sunlight, I do not open the blinds. I am also planning to install some tinting; maybe 45% ones to block out 55% of the light and '99%' UV. to make it better for the piano.

I'm not sure if I should get the reflective tints; it would be really good for my room but I'm sure it would annoy the heck out of neighbours.

Anyway, the piano is getting a tune this afternoon and some scruff marks polished off. Yay!

I'm mega surprised that a dealer who sells Shigeru Kawais would send movers like that -- at least for the Shigeru Kawais.

That's a very classy key and presentation box. Shigeru Kawai appear to be most attentive to detail with their product.

Congratulations again!

Zerox61, that must have been very scary.

Is that your piano I can hear on 5'25" and 5'29" ? If so I suppose they also didn't secure the action ?

Amazing piano! Congratulations.

The Kawai (and Yamaha) dealers in my location always fully wrap a piano during a move. The last thing they do is unwrap at the very end.

This move was not professional at all! Luckily nothing wrong happened.

Thanks to all of you for the comments about the mover. If I need my piano moved, I'll definitely definitely look for other movers. I'll talk to my dealer about this when we have contact again. So glad it got in my room in the condition it is in.

and no, the action was not locked. I was expecting that the action would be removed and then slotted back in after the piano is in position.

Welcome to club, you will be amazed how responsive this piano is.
The best touch I have ever experienced in my whole life. Sound is like a dream and competes with Boesendorfer. I'm so happy for you enjoy every second. BTW tomorrow I'm scheduled for MPA visit, I will post the result.

cool, yeah please do tell the story after the MPA visits.

What is the time difference between the piano delivered to your home and the MPA visit? they say 12 months so I think it could be any time within this time frame.

Hello Shahram,
You piano has had a good time to settle. What did he do and what improvements do you notice with the piano?

Thank you,

Robert.

Yes!! whome An awesome piano! I love the Shigeru SK7. It's the ultimate Kawai with the amazing M3 action. In my opinion there are other brands of piano that would find it VERY hard to better this magnificent Shigeru Kawai! I can say many positive things about this piano from my own auditions of it, but it would take an essay!

My next piano for sure! (when and if I can afford it or win the lottery)

Congratulations on your purchase!

Those piano movers are SHOCKING! Fancy treating such a valuable instrument like that. The piano should have been wheeled in with more care, it should have been wrapped in some sort of non slippery covering before being hoisted into the air, and I would agree that the action should have been removed. Now I highly recommend that the regulation be thoroughly checked, as I have have had experience with my RX 6 grand being stored on its side before being purchased, causing the action to go "out" of regulation.

My experience of the delivery was a touch scary too. The Big RX6 wobbled as it came down the hoist at the back of the truck AND they nearly lost it as it was wheeled into my hallway!

Once I saw those goons bring out the crane and start strapping the thing in (WITHOUT any padding) I had to stop the video to to the cringe factor.
I've seen crappy old spinets moved with more care than those guys used on that extremely nice and expensive piano.

Inform your dealer.

Maybe Australia simply doesn't have the piano volume to have good movers out there but I find that hard to believe.

Those guys were goons.

The piano volume here is quite low, particularly with prestige pianos. These aren't the only movers which are cowboys. My piano was delivered 2 years ago. 4 months later, I contracted the same specialist piano movers - it was in their name - to shift to my new house. Soon after arriving, one of them exclaimed "Who put these legs on". I informed him that it was his company. Why? Because he couldn't undo the bolts on one of the legs. Then they decided to shift it with the leg still attached.

I won't be using them again.

I had the same reaction. Quite frankly, I've never seen "professional" piano movers do anything like this. Absolutely appalling !! sick

Congratulations OP for the new piano, you must be absolutely delighted. The process is very well documented, thanks for this!

But that movers, I wouldn't have accepted that kind of handling for any of my gadgets / equipments / furniture. In my opinion, you may report this to Kawai, with the link.

If you report this to Kawai in Japan with pictures...they will have an immediate heart attack...and they will probably contact the dealer/distributor within 24 hours...

To play or not to play, that's the question!

Well the moral of the story for me will be making sure I have padding on my Shigeru when it arrives or I will send them packing back to the dealer.

Thanks for all the concerns.

I also believe that the move could have been a lot better to avoid damage to the piano. Nothing bad has actually happened though. I'm sure Kawai would not be happy to see their pianos treated like this either.

However, no irreversible damage has been done on the piano, the MPA will be here in a few weeks to check the action/regulation too.

Actually, I honestly think the padding is not absolutely required (maybe I haven't seen enough piano moving horror stories), if the piano fell off the crane, that would be 10000 times worse...

on another note, the piano is amazing! been playing pretty much everyday since I bought it =)

The SKx-L instead of SKx model is simply the latest version with the longer keys, along with other minor changes that you can read about in the Piano Buyer's brand profiles.
