you can add any note you want. You might add the bass for example. But if the arrangement sounds good as is, it's good. The more you add, the harder it is to play. In my view, it's hard enough coming up with an arrangement with 4 note chords. Start with something simple but complete, and then add on to it. Drop 2s are easy to play and have a nice open sound.
Oh yes Knotty, I agree. That's why maybe I couldn't play my arrangement of When I fall in Love, even after simplification. I think KJ's intros are a work of art. I wonder how much planning he puts into them, he would probably they are all completely improvised.

It's as great listening to your improvs and exercises as it is reading your comments, suggestions, queries, theories, interpretations, musings, and stuff. It's where, G-d willing, I hope to be in four years. Here's my latest gyration from Lesson 7. I sang the first version more or less straight, then played around a little with the second. Blues On Top

The blues sounds really good Norm. You'll be surprised where you are in 4 years

Hey Norm ! I always enjoy your singing especially the improvised version. You're a real natural at it. And I think you're in the wrong profession Many thanks for your kind words too. I think it's great that you started JOI with a 4-5 year goal. It sounds fine to me as I know you do extra stuff e.g. the sight reading jazz songs Knotty gave you, plus you put in so much effort into your singing with the masters. I also agree with Knotty that you will be surprised at your progress. After all, you already knew the blues before you started JOI. I didn't even know what blues was until I started JOI.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments and support. My intent now lies in having these first 26 lessons provide enough foundation to get this music out of my head and into my fingers.
This will take some time, but I'm emboldened with the knowledge of Hebb's Law: "Neurons that fire together wire together." Each lesson builds new neural connections -- permanent connections. So, there you have it: JOI changes brains.
Cus' complimentary comment notwithstanding, I probably am in the right profession. I seem to be approaching this venture more from the perspective of a psychologist than a singer. Dude can't help it.
Thanks again for the encouragement. Keep swingin' and singing. And now I'm heading back to Turvy Land.

Here's Joi lesson 34: http://www.box.com/s/50948c53136db7078828I recorded this because I found the blues line very challenging to sing. The problem was starting the phrase on the right note. Think I got there in the end. I'm now on lesson 35. Dave advised me to write out another line for Autumn Leaves, and here it is. I struggled for a title, but my son came up with 'Raking' so that stuck: http://www.box.com/s/53f9f29070ce273e853eAnd improv over the changes: http://www.box.com/s/b71b9067d2f040933c63The recording is fair - I've played better (only when the red dot is off), I've played worse. I feel like I *can* get it - but I can also screw up - forget where I am in the song, play from the wrong scale, or just land on a totally bum note. So I'm not sure how long to stick with the same song before moving on.

10,
sounds really great. All of it. The composition particularly. The improv is great too. Watch the rushing here and there, for example at or around 1:05. Shorter lines usually help me stick to the beat, then longer lines come naturally.
But overall, this is really great. How long have you been on this tune?

thanks knots. It's been two weeks in this life. But you know I spent about a year on Autumn leaves previously. The rushing is dreadful isn't it? I'm not really aware how bad it is till I listen to the recording. Anyone would think I was waging war on the metronome.

well being conscious of it, you've already won the battle half way. I do it too, and I generally don't know :-) Not until I listen back anyway.

Yes it does 10. Well done on the singing for Lesson 34 which with the chromatics and the arps was difficult. And the composition seemed really natural which means that the melodic lines are internalised. Improv sounded melodic too. You may spend 2 to 4 weeks per tune, it's up to you. Knotty advised me that the goal at this stage is to explore. I like to spend 4 weeks per tune. Then I have time to be sick of every chord, arp and scale, to memorise the head in a different key, and to sing 1 chorus of a master solo. But if you are sick of Autumn Leaves, you are fine to move on. Would you like an extremely easy tune, an easy tune, or a more challenging tune ?

Thanks custard. I have been wondering if I should do Autumn Leaves in a different key too. Part of me wants to move on. I can still make mistakes in it, but then probably that won't change for a long time... Knots had suggested Lady be Good, so I might do that next. Don't know if that counts as extremely easy, but I think my general plan should be to start easy!

OK, something I'm confused about. Lesson 44 voicings (bk 2, pg 74). We're on Abm7b5. The last voicing in that row is spelled 7, 9, 3, 11. Now, the first thing I'm confused about is that the equivalent chord in previous exercises is given as 7, 1, 3, 11 (pg 72). But, even given that, the notes for this Abm7b5 (if I'm reading right) are Gb, B nat, Cb and Db. Is it just that the B needs a flat? Should I just do it with the root, rather than the 9th?
