I'm going to tack on a few more to this...

Agreed, American Beauty is a great film. Also Harold and Maude.

I think Hable con ella is considerably better than Mujeres a borde de un ataque de nervios, a much more mature movie, but the latter was of course Almodovar's breakthrough movie (there were a number of less significant ones before that).

To my list, I'm going to add Festen. The first of the Dogme 95 school, and still I think the best.

Currently working on: F. Couperin - Preludes & Sweelinck - Fantasia Chromatica
J.S. Bach, Einaudi, Purcell, Froberger, Croft, Blow, Frescobaldi, Glass, Couperin

Well no gooddog, it seems no one has mentioned it.

Delightful and touching beautiful film. A true gem !

In a different vein I thought 'Breaking the Waves' with Emily Watson, was a great film.

And cheers to Pedro Almodóvar.

I hope you guys have seen Gosford Park. As great as Downton is, I can't just help but compare it to Gosford Park. smile
season 1 might get close, but season 2 is *way* too soapy.

My list:
Days of Heaven
Double Life of Veronique
The Green Ray (I love Eric Roemer; it's hard to chose a favorite)
Amores Perros
Amelie
Millers Crossing (hard to chose a Coen brothers' favorite, as well)
Trust (the trilogy of The Unbelievable Truth, Trust and Simple Men is amazing)
Dekalog
You and me and everyone we know
Afterlife

hmm. no Amodovar or Woody Allen. That's not quite right.

I agree. I picked "Amores Perros" as a great but harrowing film on my list instead of this, but a close call. Lars von Trier's shaky camera style always gives me motion sickness.

Chungking Express is a fantastic movie. This has been a fun thread to read. I am not much of movie person.. certainly not in corny, moisture laden movie theaters. I live pretty close to a store with foreign films and have enjoyed many in the privacy of my home, where can stop the film and take a nap. Sadly, I really don't remember their names.

I guess this is my list, in no meaningful order:

1. Babe Pig in the City (unexpected; in a different class of beauty and existential crisis from the original; on several critics' top 10 lists for the year; very few people agree with me)
2. Dekalog (thanks for the reminder MaryAnn)
3. Breaking the Waves / Dancer in the Dark / Dogville
4. Antonia's Line
5. Gerry (inspired by Tarr; my reason, wr, for interest in Satantango)
6. Husbands and Wives (Woody Allen)
7. Princess and the Warrior
8. Se7en (the ending alone would justify its place here)
9. The Man Who Wasn't There
9. A.I. (maybe... I'd have to see again; all I remember is that I thought the last 15 minutes to be the most sad and profound thing I'd seen in years, totally misunderstood as mawkish and "Spielbergian" by most of the critics)

Another favorite:
Triplets of Belleville - I challenge anyone to watch it and not have the theme music stick in their heads for days afterwards.

An additional word (or 2) smile about Song to Remember....

Not that this should make anyone like the movie more or consider it better, but it's part of the movie's story, and to me, part of its significance.

The film played a large part in making Chopin well known to the general public, and, as I understand, it was mainly responsible for making the A-flat Polonaise so popular and well-known. For me, that's a huge thing, because it's the piece that 'grabbed me' into classical music and made me want to study piano.

Before 1945 (from what I've gathered), the most well-known Chopin polonaise was the Military, and this one didn't have anything like its subsequent renown. This movie put the piece in the limelight, and shortly after the film was made, the song "Till the End of Time" (based on the main theme) came out, which put this polonaise over the top.

These kinds of things are what make me rank the movie as I do. I don't expect anyone else to -- but it's a fact that in these respects, this is a historically significant film.

I think you can also thank Liberace as much or more for that.

He was after. smile
And I don't at all agree with "as much or more."

I don't think he's particularly identified with the piece anyway. I know he did play it, but....)
