I know this is a weird thing but I just prefer my piano to be free of all things (lamps, picture frames, figurines etc.). What is your stand on this with your pianos?

At most, music and lamp.

Nothing on my grand piano, ever… except a small coaster on the right of the music desk; and yes, I do have my morning coffee on occasion while I sit at the piano, but have never even come close to spilling it. Nothing like having my morning coffee and playing my piano early in the mornings. smile

We keep some picture frames, a small artificial plant, our telephone/answering machine and a brass lamp on my Kawai upright. Nothing on my Baldwin upright.

I think a lot of people do set things on top of their pianos… it’s actually a pretty big piece of furniture as well as a musical instrument.

I keep my piano set with plates, glasses, and napkins. We occasionally use it as our fancy eatin' table complete with pot passers and musical interludes.

Sheet music on the music desk. A lamp to shine on the sheet music. And my "piano glasses" sit there when I'm not playing, of course they are on my face when I am playing. That's it.

Once a week when the cleaners come I close the lid and put a note on top asking them not to polish the piano.

I always have the lid open so nothing is on top, but there tend to be enormous piles of sheet music precariously stacked on the music desk. I periodically clear off the pile, but it always returns in a matter of days (sometimes hours). Usually the music is flat so the desk doesn't block the sound from me. I've gotten really good at reading music that is at a very large angle to my face.

Pot passers? Huh? This isn't illegal, is it? Never heard of these...

As Rick said, it's a big piece of furniture... ;-)
& in my tiny studio apartment, it's the biggest piece of furniture! So I've got a lot of sheet music on there, a couple of picture frames, my flute, and a small Inuit sculpture. I think that even if I had more space, I'd have trouble keeping it free of stuff - I like that it looks 'alive' if you know what i mean.

A lamp, a picture frame with a pic of my family and sheet music/books all over it - both mine and my daughters.

Oh... and my wife has put a disco ball of all things on top as well!! Which I hate ... will have to get rid of that soon.

I used to have stacks of music on the piano when I had an upright. But with the grand, I like to keep it clear so I can open the lid to half stick, and close the piano to keep dust out.

Every other horizontal surface in my house collects stuff. The piano is a dust magnet, though--or maybe the dust is just more visible because there's nothing else there!

I try to keep it clear, but with a 2 1/2 year old grandson, the middle of the piano has become the nicknack refuge. ;-)

I just love all the wonderful buzzing, rattling accompaniment when you play a piano that's stacked with junk. But then they are usually so out of tune that it doesn't matter.

Mine? Nothing but music and a bit of dust.

On the lid,nothing. OK, dust.

On the music desk: lamp, pencil, eraser, metronome, thermometer/hygrometer (combination). And music.

Is it sittin' out by the cement pond? :-)

edit: I had a 10 minute hour glass on my upright. I used it to time practice segments. My girlfriend went to use the lamp for something, and knocked the hourglass off, shattering glass and sand all over the piano.

Nothing sits on the piano now but the lamp.

Sheet music on the music desk, with my "piano glasses" on top of the pile. When the cleaners come I close the lid, stow the sheet music and glasses in a drawer, and put a note asking them not to TOUCH the piano.
