Its kind of a weird habit of mine since i was a teenager looking for deals when i didn't have any money, but i've been "dumpster diving" for years at salvation army, goodwill and other shops looking for... stuff.

I have found everything from perfect condition wool suits, 16 mm cameras, original reels of charlie chaplin, stienway pianos to the entire Beatles anthology on vinyl. Much more actually than i care to list but all for pennies on the dollar.

Yesterday a new delivery of records arrived at the Lake Forest goodwill from someone's collection and there were literally hundreds of good to perfect condition records from classical, big band, swing and soundtracks to pop and rock.

In the stack i found 5 great condition original Gould LP's. 1955 Goldberg, Well tempered, Mozart and a couple others as well as Cliburn's Emperor concerto and Liszt works. I only wanted these but there was much more and all for a buck.

The goldberg alone can be worth at least 50 bucks in good condition to 100 or more in mint.

Really cool.

Anyone else treasure hunt as well?

Not really (I already have "all the LP's my family will ever need") ha but I'm really glad there are people like you because whenever I see one of those 'used-LP' stores, I just hope that not too many of the LP's will just get thrown away, and of course a lot do. Besides getting a couple of records you're excited about, you saved them from the trash bin. smile

And of course as you said there's lots of good stuff in general that just gets thrown out. I'm always glad when someone is able to make use of it.

I hang the covers on the wall of lps with artwork or significance that I like...they sell frames specifically for them.

You really lucked out! The quality of the "finds" depends on the neighborhood surrounding the store, doesn't it? My favorite (& only) musical Goodwill find was a 50-cent cassette of Bach WTC 1, #1-8, performed by Richter. It's a 30-year-old cassette and the sound quality is not good, but on the prelude in C, the top notes of the arpeggios ring out very clearly like a harp being plucked, or like bells, just a very precise sound... it's like being surrounded by fog and hearing suddenly a voice very distinct and very close!

yeah even if the record is not in good shape you always have the artwork on the album cover for wall decor.
