Scep, it was an electric grand sound on the Nord Piano. It does sound like a guitar. I was trying to pick the loudest patch so I could be heard. But it got distorted.

I had an awesome session this evening. We were doing a Masterclass with Jazz Pianist/Educator Bill Cunliffe. It was fantastic. It's one thing to learn one on one with a teacher but to be critiqued on stage was a completely different experience. He worked on the rhythm section first and focused on each instrument.

Anyway, I played two tunes which were Footprints and Stella but the recorder conked out by the time it got to Stella. So here's a recording of one of what we played. My ensemble for Footprints had THREE guitar players and I was on the piano. By the time it got to me, the guitars knew to lay out. So it gets cleaner as we get into the tune.

For whatever reason, I got no critique whatsoever from Bill C., at least nothing that rises to "triage" level (perhaps). So I felt really good. Apparently I did not shame the ABF in this performance (but I did screw up the head a little). You can hear some his opening comments at the end of the tune. Apparently we got high marks. I also played LESS (as he had instructed us earlier). This was my first time to play as other pianists were ahead of me. The earlier pianists got hammered a lot.

Wow. There are some rough spots where she sounds her age, but on the whole, her solo is not only technically adept, it expresses her feeling for the piece and her personality. She's not playing runs and licks, but a solo that tells a story. Quite nice.

I always wonder at young kids that develop this kind of vocabulary. Of course this kid has a special talent at mimicing. She can repeat anything she hears, including Bach Fugues.

It kind of shows the limitations of most of us is that our hearing isn't as developed.

She has taken it though from copying to making her own ideas which is pretty amazing. She was playing since age 4. Apparently she's in my neck of the woods.

You should see her playing Keith Emerson style...

That brings back some hazy memories. I saw ELP sometime in the 70s.

Anyone dig Stefano Bollani? Saw him this week here in Stockholm. I thought he was a serious Keith like type, but he was just hilarious. Haven't had that much fun in awhile.. And he plays really really pretty aswell.

Yeah, he was fun to watch - and great to listen too.

Keith's not-so-serious-side:

Sounds nice. Don't know if you ever get to play heads, but I've got a written out version of Stolen Moments with really neat block chords for the right hand melody.

Btw: the album I produced featuring Palle Danielsson and his pianist sister is now nr 1 on the most sold Jazz album (Cd's) list in Sweden!

Not sure of the forum rules but, It's on iTunes for those interested.

Aha, thanks for letting me know. I'll have a talk with the distributor. This "only-in-this-country" is a drag with iTunes.

I take it all back. The album is on iTunes Australia:
http://itunes.apple.com/au/album/togetherness/id503190539

As well as all over smile just change the country (au) to another and you get the store in the respective country.

very nicely recorded Chris. Plus you have some of my favorite Legrand tunes that I grew up with.
You may have said that some pages back, but what piano did you use?

Thanks. And thanks to all wishes of good cheer!

It's a Steinway D-274. It's one of the best, if not thee best, grand that I've ever heard or played on. I had it tuned before every session.
