Hi all,

I tried the Korg microPiano at a local dealer a couple of days ago and found it interesting. Bought it! Took it home and tried it. I bit disappointed at the sound level - I wish the speakers were a bit louder...

I love the little "toy" piano... It is so small but I managed to play Bach's Simphony no.11 on it! Quite impressed! It is actually not difficult to play on the small sized keys!

After a few hours, and considering I am not going to use it a lot - just for travelling, etc - I felt quite guilty because I spent a rather large amount of money on it. So I went back to the shop and returned it.

Problem is that I now want it again! What would you do? Would you recommend it for travelling? Simple question... would you buy it Yes or No? Votes please! :))) LOL

If your wooing a chick named Lucy, that piano is a must!

[Linked Image]

Seriously, wait a week or two and the answer should be clearer to you.

Personally I would buy it however, I have 15 guitars (one of which is a mini travel guitar) so I am rather hopeless at self control.

That doesn't seem very loud at all on paper, and you yourself said it isn't. For me its important that the internal speakers on the DP I get are loud enough for use in my room.

I guess it depends, would you want to purchase external speakers for it/play with headphones mainly or are internal speakers important to you.

From the pictures it looks to me that the keys are not full size regarding their length. Are they full sized keys?

What is the target market for this piano ... home or stage?

The keys are small. All of the micro series by Korg have smaller keys, but easy to play in my opinion.
I think it is only supposed to be used at home, as travel companion or similar situations when you do not have access to a real piano... It is fun to take away as it can be battery powered

So no midi huh? Bummer. Anyone know of a smaller keyboard, preferably with 88 keys, that has midi out?

I see this Korg like a nice toy, instead of an instrument. If I had to choose a piano for travelling, I would go with Yamaha NP 31 / 11. Just my opinion.

Shokz, it is loud enough for a room but i thought it would be a bit louder. I would not buy external speakers for it and would mainly play with headphones. The sound is actually quite nice, im just not sure if i am prepared to pay way too much for such a little instrument... Yamaha's NP 11/31 costs half the money and its got midi out.

I wonder if/when there will be an update and if Korg would improve the keybed, speakers and add midi functions...

If you think its loud enough for a room (assuming thats the only place you;ll be playing it) , and that you would play it mainly through headphones then that shouldn't be much of a problem. When you say it costs alot, how much money are we talking?

Aah Okay I gotcha, In that price range you can only get so much. So I suggest picking the DP that you like best from the price range you choose.

I know, it is only 279 euros but I think it is quite a lot for something like it. I like it because it is so small, like no other hehe

I understand, keyboards/Digital Piano's seem to be quite pricey. More pricy than I initially thought. So much so, that I have never spent so much money in my life on one single item then I am going to do next month for my DP. If you like it better then anything else in its price range, then I think you should go for it. x

I guess it depends what you want …

For a keyboard/digital piano €279 is not terribly much, but for a toy it's a lot of money. In a way the MicroPiano moves between those two categories – it sounds surprisingly good, but the small keys and the limited connectivity limit the applications.

Still, I think you shouldn't have brought it back. It's so funny and cute and I'm sure it would look cool on stage or somewhere around the house laugh Somehow, I would really like to have one with a red lid, retrofit it with MIDI and have it as some cool gimmick on stage smile But then … what would it be good for? Actually, most stuff I play is kind of too serious for the convincing implementation of an apparent toy piano (which, however, is in reality a toy piano with benefits!). So, I guess you're right, if you don't really have use for it, there's no point in keeping it.

Consider the Yamaha NP series as a replacement. They are very portable, sound pretty good and have full-size keys. The NP-30 used to retail for about the same money you paid for the MicroPiano.

Guys, thank you all very much for your comments.
I think I need some time to think about it and see if I finally get it again. I will keep you posted!

What are your thoughts on buying something like this for a child (7 years old) with small hands? Would it be a good or a bad thing? The price doesn't seem that outrageous to me.

Well, I finally bought it again and after having played it for some time during the weekend I must say that I am very pleased with the small thingy :))) It is fun!

Giin, I do not really think the instrument is suitable for learning purposes. Even children should really start learning on a decent weighted DP and preferably an acustic piano.

Thanks for all your comments guys!

Luis
