I'm worrying about what to do at two conferences I'm attending in March. I've written to the hotel to ask about a piano, but no response. I've found a piano store nearby that rents piano rooms to teachers for lessons. Someone on the MOYD thread suggested contacting nearby schools and churches, too.

Large conference hotels often have a grand piano or two tucked away somewhere. I've been lucky at the last couple I've been to. But the desk staff don't always even know they exist. The last conference I went to was at the Renaissance Hotel in Fort Worth. I asked about pianos when I checked in and was told they no longer had one.

In prowling around there I found 3 different grand pianos. One of them, a concert grand, was locked, but the two others were open. They were even in pretty good tune. They were in open areas with some people around, so I played but didn't feel I could really do serious practice. Even luckier is to find one tucked away in an inconspicuous place.

Hi raptor,
If you get piano craving in Japan, just look for a Yamaha or Kawai piano rental rooms. They're everywhere! You can rent a practice room at very reasonable hourly rates. Also, all kindergarden and elementary school teachers are required to be able to play the piano, so any university with an Education Department will have piano practice rooms.

Have a nice trip!
