You're right, DeBrucey -- it was a wonderful presentation of the Barber Concerto. She has a great sense of style for this music -- as did the conductor and orchestra! There was precision, rhythmic snap, melting lyricism where needed. I could hear a lot of details that I hadn't previously picked up on. Although Barber is generally thought of as Neo-Romantic, I think it's more appropriate to regard him as American Neo-Classical, along with Copland, Persichetti, Bernstein, Dello Joio, et al. Frankly, I've found other performances somewhat bloated and self-important, and thought the problem was the composition itself -- but this performance demonstrates how strong the piece can be when in the right hands. Brava!
