I think this is the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/12/arts/music/12waki.html

A couple of things:

-- I would think that if anything it's worse for piano grads than non-piano grads. But.....

-- The information in the article doesn't indicate anything like the figure that John cited. Most of those people are basically making a life in music.

But, for what it's worth, that figure from John is well in line with what I recall reading (elsewhere) and what I think I've seen.

Maybe it's not the article he's referring to... I do remember reading that statistic too, however.

I'm curious to know why you think that it would be worse for piano grads? Though there are more grads, there is always a larger market to teach privately, and every other instrumentalist needs a collab pianist. I feel as though pianists would fare much better than orchestral instruments - their job options seem much more limited.

I think pianists do have it easier, and for the same reasons Richter gives. Chris Foley has a great list on his blog:

http://collaborativepiano.blogspot.com/2006/01/career-options-in-collaborative-piano.html

Simply put, there are a lot of opportunities for pianists. The problem occurs when pianists start to limit what they want to do - if they only want to play solo recitals and concerti, then the list of opportunities narrows very quickly.
