The UK has banned an air brushed photo used in a L'Oréal advertisement for being misleading.

What's next? Banning quantization for musicians who can't play perfectly in time.

The horror of it all. smile

Remember that when polyphonic synthesisers first became widely available at the end of the 1970's, the Musician's Union - at least in the UK (I don't know about other countries) seriously tried to prohibit synthesisers on TV and other large public performances. The argument ran like this: Barry Manilow (and other traditional format artists like him) used to take an orchestra on tour with them, along with their band. Now, with the advent of the new technology, they take two, three or four session keyboard players. In other words, hundreds of highly specialised professionals were straight out of a regular job.

Hmmm... would we be better off if each individual button were still carved from bone by a single crafter?

Harpsichordists resisted the piano... gambists resisted the violin.

Music and music performance evolve, like everything else. But what reasonably discerning audiences know is that the sound of a synthesizer isn't remotely like that of 28 superb orchestral musicians working in the theater pit under the baton of a skilled conductor.

How many gigs did Horowitz lose to player pianos? wink

Yes. Along with the fact that the synthesiser was and is a creative instrument in its own right - that was clear in pop and progressive rock circles. But that was not how the MU saw it at the time. Of course it was untenable to prohibit the new instruments, but at the time it was not obvious.

I know a guy in So. Cal. who was a studio musician. He couldn't talk about what popular rock songs he actually played on. He did say he spent a good amount of time called out to fill in for a person in a rock band on tour.

I can understand the banning of the add. It is deceiving. If you use this product. You will look like this. It ain't true. Unless you own an air brush.

Got to admit though, they've really overdone it in this ad. Barely even looks like Rachel Weisz anymore.

No, surely it's just the result of using L’Oréal’s Revitalift Repair? I'm going to buy some tomorrow!
