I want to create some simple music for video presentation. I play digital piano and have a Yamaha P-155. I know it can output a MIDI file, but I don't know what else I need to create the music needed. What is the "thing" that I need called? Is it a MIDI box? a synthetizer? or what?

Could you also recommend some books or sites describing the process? I am familiar with the concept (I am an electrical engineer), but I need some information on the practical side (like what hardware/software do I need).

I am using Windows 7.

Thanks!

I believe you're talking about a USB MIDI Interface. I made a thread a few days ago and members here mentioned a few different methods you can use.

As for software, if you're feeling cheap (like me) You can always record to Audacity.

Hi Lynsey, thanks for your reply, but suppose I want not only recording my own piano playing, but I want to record my piano and then add a violin via my digital piano, what software do I need to combine the two recording together? Will Audacity allow me to do that?

Yes, Audacity will do that nicely. Record the two tracks separately, load them and sync them up in time, and then decide how much volume to give each track and mix down.
