Hi everyone,

I just joined the forum! A friend of mine gave me a Lindeman upright piano. I have done tons of research and stumbled upon this site... http://www.balaams-ass.com/piano/52-finis.htm. It describes how to refinish the piano in the following way. After dismantling or course.

1. Strip the old finish ( I used Citrus Strip and a plastic putty knife)
2. 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner while using 0000 steel wool.
3. buff the surface with steel wool and small amount of denatured alcohol.

I am still making it through the process, but I have a few questions concerning the new paint. I am looking for any advice too please. Currently the piano is mahogany color and I plan to paint it. I am hoping for a high gloss showroom finish ( or as close as I can get smile ) So far the procedure is to start with a matte color and finish with multiple coats of a high gloss clear coat. I own a 6 gal. air compressor and I am not sure if that is adequate enough if I were to buy a paint sprayer attachment? Or should I just rent one of those airless paint sprayers?

My last comment is that I live in Central Florida and I am completing this in my garage. I have a feeling a dehumidifier is a must. I hope this provides you with a clear picture of where I stand and thank you for reading! This is my first time refinishing a piano and I am enjoying the learning process and most importantly I want to do it right.

James

You cannot do the modern high gloss finish in your garage. The finishes used for that are highly toxic, and require a spray booth and respiratory equipment.

If you would like to do a high gloss finish, you could look up a book on French polishing. That is highly labor intensive, but the chemicals are not as bad. I suggest you start with something smaller than a piano, to see whether you think you are up to it.
