A friend of mine is giving away a 1930's Webster upright piano. I would like to get one so that my kids can learn how to play.

Has anyone heard of this manufacturer? Is it worth the expense of moving and tuning it?

Webster Piano Co. made in Leominster, Mass., established 1890. Last piano built in 1926.

If she's giving it away, it might be priced right...but then again. You might want to buy the Piano Book by Larry Fine - and read up a bit about used pianos and how to purchase them. There's lots of helpful advice. IF you're really short on time, maybe try the library and borrow their copy. It has a whole section on used pianos.

If the piano has had some work done to it over the years and seems playable, it might be OK...but only after you have a technician evaluate it. If it clearly sounds horrible with lots of keys either missing or not functioning, you can probably skip the technician - and try for a better piano.

There might be better alternatives, but I understand, sometimes there aren't.

Thank you for your response.
It actually said Webster - New York so I don't know if they also had manufacturing there.
I found the Piano Book by Larry Fine at Barnes and Noble but it did not have Webster listed.

All keys are working but I will follow your advise and have a technician look at it.
