Hello. I am considering a Schafer & Sons Piano, Model # VS42F. It is a 42"/52"? upright. It is in great condition from just eyeing it. Barely needs tuning if at all. Selling for $1500. Seller says it is 4 years old and she bought it new. I read that S&S sold used pianos from Korea. I am getting it for my daughter who is now married and had 6 years of lessons as a child and now wants to pick up where she left off. Can someone tell me about this Model and was it made in Korea by Samick or Young Chang? I did a little homework but the web does not have much on Shafer & Sons. I would appreciate it, as time is running out. The only thing I noticed is that the brass hinges are a little tarnished. But not bad. Also, I would like to know if anyone knows if it has a lacquer finish or polyester finish. Thank YOu

Probably made by Young Chang in Korea, and certainly a polyester finish. There's a big difference between 42" and 52" pianos (I assume this one isn't extendable!). Bigger is better. The serial numbers for pianos made in 2003 started with 2,559,000; that's the most recent I have.

The piano was made by Samick. A VS42 is 42" Duh! Who's buried in Grant's tomb? grin The piano is polyester. That piano was manufactured in the mid to late eighties. I did hear that Vern Schafer had some pianos made a few years back by some Chinese manfacturer in his retail comeback in southern CA. though I am willing to bet that it is a Samick /Korean manufactured piano when Vern Schafer was in business as for Colton piano in the 80s and early 90s. wink

$1500 is way too much dinero !$750 is more like it.

The original VS 42 was a Sojin (Daewoo) built piano, not Samick and not Young Chang. The seller may have bought it four years ago but it was probably from someone else who bought it originally 15-20 years earlier. If the serial number starts with 4-5 Capital letters followed by 4 numbers it would be Samick made. The Sojin built pianos were uniformly horrid.

The finish is most likely (almost certainly) polyester. Nothing wrong with properly applied poly, it holds up well over time.

In the immortal words from Monty Pythons' "Holy Grail", "Run away! Run away!"

$1500 would be too much for anything built by Sojin of that size.

Dale, Though between Sojin and Samick,I would hope that it was Samick. I think the VS42 is a Samick and the VS41 was a Sojin but the serial# will tell the tale. Either way $1500 is a rippp! wink

Thanks for your reply, it was helpful. And not only am i from the grave. I just found out that the VS means Vern Shafer. hahaha If the VS means Vern Shafer and the 42 means 42 inches. What would the F stand for? BBinton

Though most VS42(s)are what is considered a continental console with no front legs or toeblock,I believe there were a few that had front legs. The "F" would designate a cabriolet leg as in "French Provincial". How's that for an educated guess. grin It could mean FORGET IT! for $1500. wink

So, we know the seller is lying to you and the piano is worth half or less of the asking price, and that you haven't had a tech inspect it for condition (which I suspect will tell some more tales).

The missing part is, how does it sound, how does it feel to play, and is there a mouse nest in the case. So many people never think to look.

Tell you what. Why don't you give your daughter a nice card (or a little piano-shaped music box) with a check for $1500 inside and tell her to get her own piano. Nice gift, if you ask me, and it would at least help significantly to make a decent down payment. Since she's not a little girl anymore, she may be better off picking out her own instrument.

I think you all are so funny. I have laughed so much at many of your remarks. I did almost ask if the 'F' stood for "Forget It". And loved the piano music box idea. hahah. It does have front legs and they are french provincial. It also has a hinged left side where the right side can be propped up on top. My daughter and I like this about it. It is a nice looking and nice sounding piano. I contacted Colton Piano who sold S&S pianos and someone there said that "If his memory serves him correctly" it was made by Samick in Korea and was older than told, and that if it was well maintained could be anywhere from $900-$1200. He knew exactly it's description. I plan to post a picture and it's serial number soon. How do you put a picture on here anyway? Jeff Cleff....you are funny. And she is still my little girl. And how do you put the smiley faces on here? Remember, I'm from Grant's Grave. Bobbie

The piano was manufactured in either 1984 or 1985 depending on whether you reference the serial # to Schafer & Sons or the Samick database.

Hi... i own a Schaffer upright in extremely good condition... all it will need is a tuning when it's moved.

I am thinking of selling it. Can someone tell me about it and what's a fair market value?

Thanks...

In that this thread is over a year old, my value assessment on that VS42F has dropped a couple hundred bucks. I still agree overall with pianobroker's assessment in 2010. grin

i believe it was bought either in 1988 or 1989... don't know the model. All i can find is Ser #522277, 1-3 Walnut. Inside there's an embossed "Wickman"

Thanks,
