Hi all,

This is a composer who was previously unknown to me. I stumbled upon this work when randomly searching YouTube for clips featuring Steingraeber & Söhne pianos and found it compelling. Subsequently, I bought the album on iTunes and am enjoying it very much, but I can't seem to find much information on the composer outside of what is listed on the performers' website, nor can I find sheets. If anyone has any information along these lines I'd be interested to hear about it. Anyway, listen, and enjoy smile

I was curious about the piano. From what little I could see of it, its style resembles that of the Arts and Crafts movement in architectural design.

Steingraeber's website clarifies, however :

Utzon-Grand Piano D-232:
1

a touch of the Sydney Opera House is incorporated in a D-232: Jan U1tzon realised in the Steingraeber workshops the design ideas of his father Jørn - architect of the Sydney Opera House. There the musical side of architecture was embodied and Jørn Utzon reached annother architectural zenith with his daring acoustic ceiling in the Bagsværd Kirke in Copenhagen; for this church a Steingraeber D-232 was built, based on Jørn’s design and with Jan Utzon’s detailed specifications.

Here's a WorldCat list of scores and libraries where they can be found (click on the title for the library info).

BruceD: I've never been one to really have any more interest in "boutique" or specially designed pianos than what regularly comes off the line. Perhaps an aesthetic deficit in my makeup. I've always felt the traditional design, in piano black, is lovely enough as it is. That being said, I can't say I'm all that crazy about the design on this particular piano--looks almost like a wooden crate to me. Still, being a Steingraeber, I'm sure it's a fine instrument to play.

wr: Thanks for the heads up!

I'm inclined to agree with you about the aesthetics of a black grand piano, particularly on a concert stage. While other wood finishes and different case styles might be attractive to some, I'd just as soon see that traditional style in the traditional black ebony both on a concert stage and in my home.
