This is my first post and first acoustic piano purchase. I've been skulking about for a few weeks and shopping and debating and agonizing.
It was down to a T121 or a U1. I had considered several brands and models, but kept coming back to Yamaha in my budget range. The Cable-Nelson and even the T118 just didn't do it for me. A few techs have told me that the T118, made in China by Yamaha is a quality product, but I couldn't do it. I loved the sound and feel best of the U1. I would have been happy with a T121 but decided to spend a bit extra and get what I really wanted. If budget wasn't an issue, sure, I'd love a Bosendorfer or ???.. But I wanted quality, value, stability etc. within my budget. I would have loved to check out a Kawai equivalent to the U1 but the Kawai dealer here is not good, pianos out of tune and over-priced so it was impossible to make a judgement on what the Kawai would sound like or judge what kind of service I might get. My town is isolated from other cities of any size by over 100 miles, so I chose to stay with a local dealer with a good reputation.
I have been using 2 different Yamaha keyboards and a P120 the past few years and after taking Jazz Combo at the local college the last two terms, decided to get a real piano. My favorites at the college were Yamaha and Baldwin.
So here is the deal. New Yamaha U1PE with bench, set-up and tune at shop, delivery and one in home tune at a later date. $6500 total.
It arrives at the store in about a week. I get to go down and see it when it comes out of the crate. I may watch as he does some of the set-up and tuning. The dealer is a RPT and has been dealing pianos for 30 years and has been with Yamaha for many of those years.
Thanks to all the people that provided so much information on this forum. I learned so much here and from speaking with a few different technicians prior to making my choice.
Any comments would be welcome.

Congradulations you should be happy for a long time. When I finished my masters in piano I bought a U1 for my home piano. I have been very happy with it for more than 30 years. Now I can afford a much nicer piano. However, the Yamaha has been great.

Congratulations!

Brand loyalty to Yamaha doesn't happen by accident. A U1 is a great partner to make music with.
