Hi custard, it's been a couple of weeks I think on the minors, but I never focussed on each one as solidly as you - I would do a different one on each day; all hanons and all voicings every day.

copy that - major then minor. I will try and see how it goes.

Glad you liked the singing. I felt I had to do that this time as I chickened out last lesson.

I think Knotty did your method of moving quickly through each of the minors as a one scale progression.

I learnt my minors as part of each combined (2 scale) progression.
If you do decide to move onto the combined progression, you can spend some time making a hip progression, voicings that you like a lot, that you "own".

I did all 12 major, then all 12 minor, then 6 combined progressions
One could spend 2 weeks on each of those 3.

It's good to stay with only one thing for a while so it has time to sink in.

Cus, the improv sounded really good.
I liked how you did 4 to the bar on the melody.
And some of the lines sounded really good. You're not afraid of playing really long line.

Thanks so much Knots and 10. It was fun but as soon as I hit the record button it was like major sweat and shower.

I had a quick look at Satin Doll last night. Wow the A section harmony is potentially very complex. I could use multiple scales or keep it simple to C maj.

Yes, multiple scales.
Cmaj, Dmaj, G then Gbmaj I think for the A section.
Then F, G, C and D for the bridge.

At least, that's what I would do.

It's a bunch of major 25s.

for the solos, instead of D-7 G7 | D-7 G7, you can play D-7 | G7

I will have a go tonight at the progressions and post, if you wouldn't mind reviewing.

I've still been workig on the Joy of Improv. Finished my composition for Lesson 12 birds bounce and I am playing the tunes from Lesson 23.

I think in my next lesson with Dave we will finally start the Improv. Its been a long road until here.

Sounds good. I think I have the A section ending on a Cmaj. So Ab-7 Db7 | C and then your turnaround e-7b5 A7

But I think I've also seen it as C7 B7 Bb7 A7

Probably the first is more straight forward.

Many thanks for your comprehensive review as usual.
Your C maj 7 for ending the first A section should make it easier for me to create an "at home" ending.
The only reason I changed it from C maj7 to C7 was to relate it to the turnaround E min 7b5, A7 b9.
So are you saying that I can treat turnarounds as separate to the bar preceding it ?

Can I also treat turnarounds as separate to the bar following it ?

My update:

Blues: lesson 24. Occasionally I'll improvise quaver lines over a blues progression in C - even more occasionally Bb.

Tunes: Lesson 24 (Sky Line/ Blue skies) this one is getting me all confused with the F's and Fb's and the C's and Cb's.

hanon: Curiously, I can't get these hanons reliably past 130-ish, though previous hanons I managed at 160+ sometimes. When I'm improvising at 120 and my hanons are 130, I'll start to worry. Getting more confident with the minor hanon/ii-V-i thingy.

Singing with solo - still on Embraceable You (CP, lesson 23) - and amazingly still enjoying it.

Improv - I do some of this every day, going major to minor, just trying to get comfortable in different keys.

Plan: finish book 1 by the end of the year, start book ii in Jan. Maybe do some more composing, arranging, walking bass lines, etc in between. Be confident in the ii-V-I's in all important keys, and move to the next step in Jan.
