I can play about every other style, but something about the rhythmic juxtaposition between the left and right hands that my brain can't process. What's the secret?

I can play the left hand - no problem.

I can play the right hand - no problem.

Put the two together, and my right hand wants to follow the double strikes on the same note in the left hand.

Help!

Play the left hand continuously. Add only so much right hand as you can without messing up the left. If that means one note every eight bars, then so be it. Continue until you can play two notes with your right hand every eight bars. Repeat this for as long as it takes.

Some rhythms are easier to reproduce by listening to it a lot, rather than try to read it off the score. You can't indicate how to get into the "groove" through markings on a paper, so I recommend you immerse yourself in boogie woogie music and culture. Learn about the people who pioneered this music, and expose yourself to performances of celebrated performers of the genre.

Watkino,

Noted Boogie Woogie pianists you might want to watch on YouTube are:

Silvan Zingg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QQzbCmlZM4

Johan Blohm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9b3ZZywQvg&feature=related

Dr. John

Lots of performances by Dr. John on YouTube. Pine Top Boogie, for one.

Mead Lux Lewis--famous but many years ago. Quite a few of the older ones besides him.

You probably know of some of these people already but if not I know you'll (and others here) enjoy these performances.

I don't recall having a problem playing Boogie Woogie on the piano but it's been awhile. Once I get moved I'll be returning to it, the piano and a lot of other music. Be adding a lot of variety to my old Boogie Woogie.

I wish a top concert pianist would see how great THEY can make the Boogie Woogie sound on a piano. (Relative to this 'wish' are the Earl Wild, Gershwin Etudes on YouTube and Yeol Eum Son's performance of Embraceable You--a Wild arrangement.) I think this would be a great diversion and way of relaxing at the piano for the concert pianist. I'll bet there ARE a few who do a really mean Boogie Woogie. Just maybe a few in this group!

I know I haven't helped you to coordinate your hands while playing the Boogie Woogie but thought you'd find this interesting

Music. One of man's greatest inventions. And...for me, the piano expresses it best.

They would certainly have the chops. I wonder if they could all handle relaxing the time.
