In Conjunction with Period Piano Center this is an image I took a few years ago documenting pianos. I did drop out the background and add the name of the piano.

I love the shadow and light play on those first two.

I'll figure it out eventually.
Until then you may want to keep a safe distance.

What happened to the Umlaut over the U in Blüthner?

Hello David,
I believe you have the 4mm brass inlay style decal. Here is a sample of that one new. It is almost an identical copy of yours without the flares on the sides of the font. As one can see the dots to complete the umlaut are separate from the rest of the decal, so one can elect to use them or not. In your case there, without the dots, could be quite collectable.

Dan,

Collectable, perhaps, but as a German speaker, I don't like the sound of "Bluthner" at all (besides the fact that it's simply spelt wrongly).

"Blüthner" could be translated as "Blossomer", while "Bluthner" would probably best be translated as "Bloodner"...

(Somewhat off-topic:
I see I can no longer comment your photos without joining Google+. Ugh - what an irritation!)

Larry,

That is an awesome picture. Is that from your trip to Belgium?

This is fun. I have 2 I can add easily. Here is an overhead view of a rosewood three piece rim "Centennial" concert grand piano by Steinway.

The next one is a very bad shot of one of our new Cunningham pianos in our showroom... with Andre Watts discussing a piece he just played on it.

What an interesting picture. Does that piano have trichords in the bass or is it double overstrung?

Thanks for the comment Charles. The answer is neither. There is a separate tenor bridge carrying wire strings, from D2 to Ab3. The picture shows these crossing the treble strings, which start rather high up the keyboard at A3. The tenor strings run alongside and parallel to the bass wound bichords. The bass itself is scarcely overstrung, up to E2 it is not overstrung at all. Possibly for this reason the bass has a pleasantly incisive tone. This was the standard Bluethner design for a number of years around 1880.

very cool BGJ! Best looking C7 I've ever seen! (just kidding)

I have a Canon T1i - Wonderful camera to take pictures with, RAW is awesome, but not very happy with conversion to jpeg via camera or software.

Rotom, not sure if this is the best way, but this is how I do it

1 - Upload your picture to Photobucket
2 - For that picture under "Share/link", copy the "Direct link"
3 - In the PW reply, click "Switch to Full Reply Screen"
4 - In your post, place the cursor where you want the picture placed.
5 - Click on the "Enter an image" icon on the top of the post. I use "Insert a non-floating image"
7 - Paste the link in the text box.

If you use the "File manager" it just shows up as an attachment as you can see at the bottom.

I've posted enuf piano pictures so I'll post this one that I took of my late sweet neice Breanne, 1990-2008.

BTW, if anyone considers this off topic I'll glady remove it.

Yes, I am learning the lever harp by myself from about six months. It is a 34 strings Salvi Donegal, wonderful instrument!

Hi

Here's my piano. It's a restored 6 ft 9" August Forster. Snuggles nicely into the dining room, which is also sometimes the drawing studio...

Larry,

What IS all that metal under the 1869 Erard?

I'm not Larry, but I can tell you that the gizmo built into the Erard is a Patent Resonator, which was all the rage then if we are to count the famous pianists who associated themselves with it.. paderewski, Patti and many others..

it was connected via rods to the soundboard and the bars were tuned..

I imagine it is a sort of cross between a Plate Reverb and a steel drum..

I've serviced a piano with an identical action -- but IIRC, it had a Story and Clark name on it.

Woowww, great pics.

Just remembered about some b/w pics I took some 30 years ago while at high school. I took this photography course and one of my subjects was my piano.

Have to look around and find them.

Thanks, Rich! Steal away, just give me credit when you use it. smile I'm a very amateur photographer & I'm constantly asking Bruce to "move over" or "wait a sec" on some piano he's restoring in the shop so I can get just another picture or two. He's starting to cringe when he sees me coming with the macro lens. Lol!

This is obviously a finishing room. I'm puzzled why the piano has the pedals and strings masked but the keyboard is still in place. Isn't that normally removed prior to finishing?

Thanks for the tip, Sparky! I was trying to insert a floating image (no particular reason), non-floating works much better. This is a high iso, high contrast, monochrome experiment. Great thread!

It doesn't look quite as nice inside as yours, but it's still a keeper. Maybe I'll post more pics after I get the keytops redone. Some type of Kluge whites and real ivory sharps. Can't wait!

What's so bad about that - the string terminates eventually, right? It's sort of like a maze...

Well, it looks to me like the string termination loops are definitely not right, or at least not “orthodox” or the norm (sloppy might be a good description). However, as Terminaldegree stated, the strings do terminate somewhere. I doubt the tuning stability on those particular notes would be very good.

On some high end pianos, all the plain wire is twisted/tied off individually and not looped. That is certainly more time consuming and laborious. The advantage of that (single tied wire) is perhaps some added tuning stability and the fact that if one string breaks, you don’t lose two as a result.

There is no excuse for sloppy work.

Yeah! hate when that happens. How are things at the tuning pins?

I should have thought to take pictures of that, too. Total s&%t show; some pins have 5 coils, others have one or two, and they're not neatly done, either (except the original strings, and the ones I replaced). This piano was an absolute nightmare to work on (I even tuned it to a lower pitch as a precaution).

Dear Sam,

The Imperial that is second from the right - it looks beautiful, but somehow there is something missing. I cannot quite put my fingers on it. I am sorry to dampen your photo, but I wouldn't want you to string us along.
