My parents recently purchased a Sohmer baby grand, model 57. They paid $200 (yes, 2 hundred) for it. From what I can tell by the serial number, it was made in 1963. The strings and internal parts look to be in very good condition and it sounds nice. The outside has quite a few scratches and paint splatters on it so I am refinishing it. The only major flaw it has is there is a 1/2 inch gash cut out of the music holder. It's too big to sand out or otherwise cover. Can I order a replacement music holder for a piano this old? If so where do I begin looking for one? Lastly, does anyone have any idea how much this piano is really worth? It's got to be more than $200!

My guess is you are talking about the music rack? If so, you may have a hard time finding one that fits unless you happen to find one from a junked piano. Not even sure if you can order a new one. I would suggest you clean up the one you have as best you can, then either you fill in the gouge with wood filler, then stain it to come close to matching the wood, then finish it off with either varnish, or poly urethane. OR you find someone who is handy at this type of work and buy him/her lunch for the job. On the other hand, you could paint the entire piano (satin black??) so the filled-in gouge won't show.

I know you want the piano to look nice, but with a $200 investment; you're not going to like what it would cost to get a new rack built and finished from scratch!

Refinishing a grand piano to look half decent is a pretty big undertaking unless you are skilled, experienced and have the set-up required to do a good job. If a 1/2 inch gash is really an issue for you, that tells me you should probably not attempt the job.

Clean it up a bit and spend your time and energy playing and enjoying the instrument.

I thought we'd have a hard time finding a replacement part. Unfortunately, the cut in the music rack is too large to correct with wood filler. It's almost like a piece was broken off. I think I'll just have a local woodworker cut a new rack for it. It seems like a pretty simple design.

As for refinishing it, I actually did most of the work yesterday. I'm not a professional refinisher, but I've done quite a few large, complicated pieces. It was pretty easy except for the area around the keys. That wasn't too hard, but it was very time consuming.

Thanks for your input!

You can buy a replacement music desk for grand pianos, but they are very expensive... more than what your parents paid for the piano to start with.

You might check with a piano rebuilder who has some old, used parts.

Good luck.
