I personally read your post as that of a conscientious owner who cares deeply about his instrument and wants it to be the best it can be.

Careful with that. There are other sites that archive internet information other than Google (and I'm not just referring to other search sites like Yahoo). For instance, the contents of this forum are archived at various points from Feb 14 2004 to July 11 2007 (extra karma points for the first person who knows where). Modifying your posts now will not affect what's contained in this archive. [/b]
Could this be what you\'re referring to, bitWrangler?

Now... if only I could find a version of that site which A - ignores robots.txt, and B - allows full functionality of its archived sites..... for example, I used to use a free 300mb file storage service back in 1998 to 2000 or so.... the web address was myspace.com ....

actually, you can find things on google that go back ten or twelve years or more.

once it's been on the 'net it's there forever. even if the page is no longer up, you can find the cached page.

never write, even in a private email, anything you would be unhappy about seeing on the front page of the new york times.

i can attest from hard experience that stalking is real. especially those of you who have young children must be careful. we don't know everyone who views these pages. they are open to the entire world to see.

this is just realism, not paranoia. wackos do exist. what motivates you isn't what motivates them. act accordingly.

DING DING DING DING. We have a winna!

Having a spider that ignored robots.txt would not be cool (though anyone who thinks that they don't exist is being Pollyanic smile )

Pique has some good advice, heed it well.

If you don't ask questions, you don't get answers.

If you don't throw out a line, you don't hook a fish.

If you stumble, you get up and keep going.

If you stop because everyone is staring at you and you run and hide, that's not living.

I was declared dead in a bad car accident nearly 8,700 days ago. I already know what happens when you die.

I'm not afraid of dying today. I'm afraid of not living.

There's a lot of life at PW.

I love it when people do a search for you and fail to realize there are likely thousands of people with your first and last name out there... doing and posting who knows what?!

bitWrangler - Are you sure that is OUR Monica K's information? laugh

Hence the utilization of software to "connect the dots". A human of course can do the same thing if they feel it's worth the time and they are just focused on one or a few individuals. You would be astounded at the sheer amount of automated data mining that occurs on the web.

And yes, I "know" it's OUR Monica K (though I won't say how I know smile ).

Well, serious sleuthing was not required. Seeing as my profile says I'm a professor of psychology, all it takes is a google of "Monica Psychology Kentucky" to lead you to my dept. homepage where, in an attempt to reach out to the students, I talk about everything BitWrangler disclosed.

Though quite frankly I can think of a thousand more interesting things to read. laugh

Monica, you're giving away all my secrets wink

Though I admittedly alluded to as much earlier smile

Such is the beauty of the internet, more information that you ever thought you wanted to ignore.

Not to worry, agraffe, and thank you for your kind words. smile BitWrangler found that stuff because at one point or another I wrote something that ended up on the web containing that information-- so obviously it's not anything I worry about people knowing. smile

I'd rather act as though I live in a world full of good people than a world full of evil. I may be wrong about that, but living the alternative (= under a cloud of fear) is an even less attractive prospect to me.

Of course there are some things where caution is warranted... I'd be upset if BitWrangler published my social security number, for example. wink And I don't respond to any of the 5 emails I get a day warning me that my PayPal account has been compromised. laugh

...and if I ever do upgrade my piano, I think I'll play my cards close to my chest on the forum until *after* the deal is settled. smokin [/b]
There is an "upgrade" from the M&H A??? wink

Spam (and/or its potential for existence) is one of many reasons why I have 2 gmail accounts (1 of which I'm not currently using much, and I'm not sure if I still remember the login info on it), 5 hotmail accounts, 3 fastmail.fm accounts, 3 yahoo acounts (plus a 4th that's not currently being used for mail, if I remember correctly), and several other currently dormant / probably non-existant accounts that I had several years ago. Sometimes though my spam filters accidentally filter out something I want. Occasionally, when I'm checking my email, I'll select all messages in a folder, sort by sender, uncheck the ones whose messages I want to keep, and delete the rest.

Obsess much? I've been on the interweb since you were in diapers (posted, published, etc.) Between university and work and home accounts, I gave up on one just because three were too much to keep up with. One reason I keep two is because of the auto-deletion "feature" of my employer's "virus" protection.

You have seventeen accounts? [Linked Image]
