hi all, just joined this forum so go easy with me.

iv been playing keyboard on and off from the age of 8, never been able to read music properly so iv recently started teaching myself..all good so far.

lookin at a new digital piano, possibly on finance, got a budget of no more than £500. dont mind second hand aslong as its a good make and will last for years to come so i can teach my young daughter.

can anyone point me in the right direction please. im from the west midlands and hav not got a good choice of shops around here to look at one, so im trusting you guys. want something with weighted keys and plays like a true piano.

thanks alot

Bear in mind that you might also be in the market for a piano stand, a chair, ... will you be using headphones, internal speakers, external speakers ... amplification?

How many keys? A full keyboard with 88 keys ... less?

Nothing is as simple as it seems. smile

Perhaps you can give us a bit more information.

sorry, thought i had found one but then read bad reviews so back to square one.

feels like im making the biggest decision of my life, i can get a Yamaha ydp-131 for £320, is this worth it? iv read that 2x6watt speakers a terrible but as a learner would i need anything more? i just want to start getting the feel of the keys. heres my needs:

88 keys full size
headphone jack
internal speakers (preferably bigger than 6watt)
something that doesnt look just like a keyboard or else the missus wont have it in the dining room.
something as realistic (key wise) as an acoustic as possible

hope this helps, also iv sorted headphones and a stool out so my budget is now £400.

one last thing, am i being miss-led when im being told dont have nothing but yamaha? iv seen a couple i like on G4M, dp680 is one with 2 x 20w speakers and alot more features than the yamaha ydp-131 but would it be better for me?

If you're prepared to wait a month or two, the new Yamaha YDP-135 would be worth considering, and features better specs than the older YDP-131/151.

Cheers,
James

I can't comment on that YPD 131 since I've never played on one. (I just Googled that model, saw it listed at a UK store and that it was discontinued. If that's the case, you might have more room for price negotiating.) From what I saw of the YPD 131, it looks just fine.

If I were you I'd just take some time, read more posts here ... and post more yourself, ... and take several trips to your local store to see what's out there. Is there a teacher in the picture to help with in this decision?

One option that many folks forget, you can always rent. My daughter rented an electric keyboard for my grandson. These purchases are not a one time purchase to last the rest of your life, take your time and shop around .... and relax.

i was considering this rental option but there isnt any kind of prices anywhere, i dont really want to rent because the money i spend on renting i may aswell of finance one from new.

im planning on visiting my nearest shop (birmingham) the weekend as there arent any in wolverhampton so i will look around. unless i can get more knocked of the ydp-131

Yes, just plug a more powerful amp/speakers into the headphone socket.

Pretty much the same way you'd "upgrade" the sound system in an iPod, you plug a stereo system in the headphone jack. "upgrade" is really the wrong word because the piano remains unmodified.
