I'd like to buy one new powered speaker to replace my pair of Viscount / Voice Systems 180 Watt PA speakers. I am considering various types, many of which have been discussed before: Electro Voice ZXA1, QSC K8, K10, JBL PRX612M, ...

I'd like to use the speaker (mono) for as many gigs as possible. Usually it's an audience of up to 50-100 people. In some cases, e.g. when accompanying a singer or playing jazz, maximum loudness is not really an issue. In other cases (larger venues), a PA system would be available, so that is not really an issue too.

But in case I am playing in a blues band (e.g. in a bar) or playing with a larger band (15 musicians on stage) it can be difficult to make myself heard (often using one speaker), which is extremely frustrating. Now I am wondering whether people on this forum can say anything how suitable the different PA speakers are that I mentioned. Will a single ZXA1 speaker be sufficient when playing with a drummer, bassist and guitarist (18W Marshall amp) in a small venue? Even when they're playing quite loud? What about the K8? Or do I need anything larger?
For these kind of gigs, I usually use my own amplification (no PA).

Of course it's difficult to say without giving exact number, but possibly forum member have good/bad experiences with the volume of these powered speakers.

For stage monitoring, the ZXA1 will be fine... but if you have to fill the club and keep up with loud drummers and guitarists, probably not. The QSC K8 or RCF 410A (or 310A, cheaper but heavier) would do a better job of that, though piano doesn't sound as nice through them. For even more volume capability and high quality sound, I like the JBL PRX625.

Thanks for the quick reply. I read similar things w.r.t. the Zxa1's volume elsewhere. So you think a K8 would be more suitable? This is one of the most difficult aspects to test about speakers; the only option seems to be to test them on stage. If testing with the actual speaker is not an option, is there an SPL level I could aim for?
