How much should I pay a piano technician to examine a used piano that I am interested in buying?

If I want the technician to examine more than one piano, might a discounted rate apply?

When I bought that Premier Grand two years ago I hired a tech to meet me at the sellers home and evaluate it for me. I think I paid $75-$90, but he applied that towards the voicing/heavy tuning it needed once I got it home.

On a related note, since there isn't a local dealer with a new GH160R near me, I put an ad on Craigslist in the local market of where the piano is located seeking to hire someone to evaluate and compare the piano for me. I'll let you know what sort of response I get and what the range in prices are.

We charge the same as for a tuning. If we were doing multiple evaluations, we would give the same discount we give for multiple tunings.

We do the same, Keith.

ljenkinson - you can also go to the Piano Technicians Guild website & search for a technician in your area.

Do any of you know of a registered piano technician located in Montreal, Canada?

I just found a local (to that area where the store is located, I live 1000 miles away) musician (has a website, is a legit musician) that is willing to be my "secret shopper" for $50. Getting one or two independent opinions seems like a good investment to me, and he is even more qualified to evaluate the piano than I am since he plays a lot of different pianos in his line of work.

I have been quoted anywhere from $60-200 (recently). I've been asking techs about an inspection and written appraisal for insurance/financing purposes.

It depends on where you live. I can pay anywhere from lunch and cookies up to $45 plus tax for a technician to evaluate a piano. I prefer the technician that'll take lunch and cookies for payment;)

Rates today are generally much higher than $45. A lot depends on the driving time. Nearby most charge somewhere near $100.

I live in a low cost of living area, so prices for various services are generally lower than in many other areas of the country.

The local tech in my area charges $75 in his regular service area.

I've inspected all the used pianos I've purchased myself (about 5). I've learned what to look for in terms of the major issues.

I missed some cracks in the treble bridge on an old upright... they were directly behind the key board and hard to see. I learned my lesson...
