There's certainly some truth here.
The moment I chose to discuss my plans to purchase a grand piano was towards the end of an anniversary meal when the bottle of French Haut-Medoc Grand Cru was starting to work wonders. And it worked!
Fast forward, long story short, the grand is no longer here but my wife is, together with my second love - a truly fabulous upright.

Reasons I am very unqualified to offer advice: 1) I now live alone in a small 40 year old mobile home with TWO very nice pianos and a very affectionate cat.

LOL

Small mobile home WITH a GRAND piano (two grands even maybe)?

Or go to a printers shop and get a laser cut stencil made that says "Steinway upright" and then stencil it on the lid of the grand.
Remind her that she suggested an upright when it arrives.

Your wife needs to be able to think of a good reason why she couldn't possibly do without having a nice grand piano in her house ... much like that fabulous pair of shoes or handbag ! It's just a thought .. but has she ever watched the grand piano scene in the film "Pretty Woman" ? smile smile smile

No, just just one grand and an upright. Maybe though, I should get another grand and put it at the other end of the trailer so the damn thing doesn't tip over when it gets windy...

I can only tell you what worked for me. I had purchased a Roland digital piano, but when I went to the Steinway store and looked at the grands, I sort of knew I would ultimately get a grand.

When I later found a particular instrument that pleased my fingers, ears, and wallet, I was still more convinced.

Although I didn't construct this as a tactic, I wound up going to various piano stores (dragging my wife along) and playing them, talking with the dealers. Ultimately I guess she decided that I really wanted one, because she changed from obstructive to supportive, even though I suspect she thinks it's overkill. I now have a 5ft. 10in. grand that I really enjoy.

Oh yes, we have been married for 43 years, and either of us would not want the other to be without something the other really wanted (time, money, and space permitting).

I am sure the latter is the essence of the first.

I don't think dragging my wife around to a lot of shops would be possible, because around here there are only 2 stores and it is at least 50 miles to the next city, but I know my wife would want me to be happy. We just have a difference of opinion about how much space my happiness should take. It's not even the money.

Many other excellent suggestions in the post. I might suggest that you go find a very large (preferably concert) grand that is in poor cosmetic condition or a finish that you know your wife does not care for, expensive & overpriced, out of tune and with an awful tone. Tell her how much you love the piano and then proceed to play a song that you secretly knows that she doesn't like. When she indicates that you are out of your mind even considering it try to look hurt and dejected.

Next, take her to the piano that you would really like to have that is much less expensive, shorter length and in the finish that she prefers and in brilliant tune and lovely tone. Play a song that you know she loves or a sentinmental favorite. Ask her which one she prefers and then take her to a nice dinner.

If all this does not work buy her several strong drinks tell her how much you love her and just request that she please be reasonable and do things your way! Ar Ar!

Do you have the room and budget to add a piano room? What is it about your playing that bothers her--the songs you play, the tone of your current piano or? Maybe you can isolate the resistence factor and solve it for your mutual satisfaction. Wish you well!

Wow, nice piano, Tweedpipe!

Don't know if I have any good advice for the OP, but when I decided I wanted a grand piano, my wife of 35 years, who is severely disabled due to a brain tumor, was all for it. Problem was, we really didn’t have room in our home unless we rearranged everything.

So, we decided to enclose our attached car port (20x20x10) and it worked out great!! We both have enjoyed the music room immensely! Fact is, I’ve got room for two grand pianos!!! (but that might be a little harder sell laugh )

All the best!

Yes, a hygrometer. Standard factory fitment, built-in unit on this model.

Rick, if you have room for 2 grand pianos, you have room for at least a dozen accordions. Just put it that way to your wife. crazy
